I am running a Dell Ispiron 8600 OS Win XP and have attached a 500gb WD external HDD for Connect 4 sound & entertainment system storage. Since connecting wireless router and/or reinstalling XP to repair another problem I am unable to access the WD drive at all. The sound tech can access everything on my external hdd and I can see the network on the web but cannot access any of the files on my laptop. A Connect 4 tech thinks there may be something in Windows which is blocking access, can anyone give me any suggestions please.

sell "as is" and get a wd elements hdd. WD3200 should have been recalled. I guess 30% of that entire model/line were defective in system recognition..thus..inoperable or severally defecient/limited in function. BITE THE BULLET on that one[win most...lose some..oh well]
Please post the OS in use when asking computer questions. It may be that the usb port has lost connection by plugging and unplugging the Hdd. Quite common.
You need to look in control panel > system > device manager. There you will see an ! mark over the device that is not working. By right clicking the icon you will have the opportunity to "uninstall it". Then close those windows down > close the machine down > plug the Hdd in and restart the machin. It should find the disk again. If not, remove it as above and replug after the machine is fully started
You run MS Windows Update to download and install the latest OS updates. Your WD external HDD should be detected after OS update.
For non updates system, try to connect WD to the USB Port where it worked before. If you have 4 USB ports for instance, try to connect it to these ports one try at a time. Windows XP might have assigned one USB port for your device before when it was working just fine.
Using FAT32 these days on a current OS will half the HDD storing capabilities especially if your unit uses' a SATA HDD , FAT32 speed compared to NTFS is less than half and the compression tool on NTFS are more compact and compile better , also FAT32 is used to apply an operating system not for external storage and if you are using your external storage HDD for holding an operating system to the HDD will be suspectable to contracting viruses and putting your data at risk , since the external HDD is static and does not run through the OS registry
