I suggest you contact 2wire support here, and ask about getting a replacement. Either that or contact your ISP, who sold you the modem. They may have a replacement available.

Hello hopefully ican hel solve your issue i have a 2wire modem myself ans have found that 2wire products are very picky. To answer your question for 2wire products when you try to connect wirelessly it wants you to type in the wep key which is the serial number of the product otherwise you are unable to connect. Now as far as losing your password if you are able to get into the 2wire product via browser so you can bring up the main software page you can try to see if you can get too any info that relates to resetting your info like username and password. Otherwise do a search for your product and search forums and you will most likely find someone that has had to recover there info and they will tell you how they do it. Good luck
You need to run from the DSL modem into the ethernet port at the very top of the 1701hg. Use your other 4 ports below to send one the computer and one to your vonage. You will no longer need to "jump" though your vontage unit. Other than connecting the power cables, you are all hooked up.
The 2Wire 2700 is a residential gateway, a modem and router in-one. There is an RJ-11 jack in the back of the gateway and this is where your dsl phone cord plugs in. There are four RJ-45 jacks in the back for connecting devices using ethernet cable. As a router is can operate both wirelessly and wired. For wireless operation you'll need the WEP key which is located on the tag on the bottom of the gateway. It's the number enclosed in brackets, between the two bar codes.
and click on the firewall icon. Click on firewall settings and, if prompted, enter your system password to reach the advanced settings page. select the computer that will function as the VPN server. In the left column, select PPTP server. click on Add, then done. or try changing the IP scheme to the
172.16.0.0/255.255.0.0 or 10.0.0.0/255.255.0.0 schemes by accessing gateway.2wire.net, go to home network icon, then advanced settings. but if you manually configure or disable dhcp, be sure to write down the subnet mask & IP assigned to the 2wire then click on save. if all else fails, run it on DMZPlus mode, however this solution will allow all inbound traffic to the computer. if it still doesn't work on DMZPlus mode, the VPN is either using the same IP scheme, is using IPSec 50 or 51, or will not work with the 2Wire gateway.
if you wantd to change the type of encryption from WEP to WPA...aside from accessing the modem through 192.168.1.254....this ip is used on 2wire1000hg series, 2wire1800hg, 1701hg, 2701hg-b and 2700hg-b
*then you might need to indicate the modem password
*if you know it...indicate so, if not, click on the link that says "I forgot password", it would give you a hint...if you still forgot it, click on "I still forgotpassword"
*after that you need to click on "home network" which is the icon on the top portion of the page
*then you need to click on "wireless settings"
*under "wireless security" you would be able to change the "authentication", whether it is WEP-OPEN, or WPA-PSK"
