This has happened to me before, also. What I had done was copy a disc IMAGE from the old, smaller drive to the larger drive - and the larger one turned into the same size! You did not mention your operating system (Windows, Mac, etc) but my solution was in Windows to go to Disk Management function and view the unallocated space left. Sure enough, there was "unclaimed/unused" space for the entire difference in size. Following the instructions of the Disk Management tool, I just added the remaining space to what was C: drive. I could have just as easily created a different drive space with the leftover, it's up to you - but I find it preferable to have my space in one chunk.
Note: This is a very sensitive area of Windows when you're dealing with file systems. A raw beginner might want to have an experienced friend help them through it, but if you follow instructions EXACTLY even a first-timer should be able to do it. If this solution does not work, let us know. Best wishes - Mark
You cannot get the full 320Gb capacity because the BIOS can only support a maximum of 127Gb. You only hope is a BIOS firmware upgrade that can support 320Gb. Check out the Acer WEB site to see if a BIOS upgrade will solve your problem. OTHERWISE Install a 127Gb hard drive in your Acer and put the 320Gb hard drive in an USB hard drive adapter case and use it as an external USB hard drive because it is not affected by the BIOS limitation.
Well, if it's a 320GB model, it's usable capacity will be around 300GB and that's it. In the drive's properties, what's the percentage of used vs. total capacity? Perhaps you are have compression turned on that reports higher capacity than actual? With music and video files, which don't compress at all practically, this is useless. Also chances are, that you are misreading the free space information, look closely at the units in which it's shown.
I would say the best way is to compress your files on your selected drive by going to my computer right clicking on the drive that you want to increase the capacity, click properties, then the tools tab. U should be able to defrag, compress from there. But I am pretty possitibe that the 15 gig drive is for backup of files for your computer incase the bigger drive crashes.
Is it showing the 300gig in the properties? if yes then try to copy with command mode,If again its given problem then u need to backup your data and format the drive, then try copying.I think it will work.
Check to see if your motherboard has a sata controller on it. The user manual will tell you. You can get a new on on asus.com. If it does support it, you will need sata drivers for it which you can download from the website as well.
If it doesn't work you can add one external by picking up and external drive case for sata controllers. Then all you need is a spare USB 2.0 port. Make sure you get one with a power supply for it because at that size getting 500 gig to work will require extra power to perform properly.
the hard drive you bought is not compatible with your motherboard. I am pretty sure that your board is only compatible with IDE ATA hard drive. you can still use it as external hard drive though.
Plug In your external drive!
if you have any data back it up!(you said it was new so i assume there little to none)
Go to start->run type diskmgmt.msc
In the bottom pane look for your external drive! If there is a partition, right click and delete!
Now the drive should appear full black on disk management! If not delets any other partitionin the drive.
(Make sure you are deleting the external drive partition(s))
Now you can create drives by right clicking on the drive and click create partition! It should bring up a wizard which gives you the option to format, set partition sizes and everything!!
If you don't wanna go through all that check out a third party software called Partition Magic: http://www.partitionmagic.com/home_homeoffice/products/overview.jsp?pcid=sp&pvid=pm80
hope this was helpful,
