it looks like either a cassette tape or a sad face. people have said it's a voicemail or text message icon but i have no voicemails or texts. the icon appeared right when i bought the phone

I think the icon your referring to is actually not listed in the manual, I wondered what it was to for a while. Take out your SD card, power back up... if the icon is now missing.. it is the "SD card inserted" icon that nobody bothered to list in the manual.
