Question about Yamaha RX-396 2 Channels Receiver
When it plays cable hd channels, dvd movies, and tuner stereo it only shows on the AV display left and right speakers lit up instead of all 5. when i go into "signal input" mode it shows 2/0/0 for channel signal input.
My connections are as follows; from my cable provider DVR to my HDTV Monitor, i have an HDMI cable. Then, from my cable DVR box to the Yamaha AV i have an optical digital cable connection.
Why does my yamaha a/v not show all my speakers working and the input signal at 2 channel?
Solved problem with Yamaha HTR-6040 AV Receiver. My daughter had inadvertently changed the program to "Direct Stereo" mode which allows sources to bypass the decoders and DSP processors so you can listen to 2-Channel PCM and Analog sources. Nothing to decode digital audio in this setting!

Does it work without PS3 attached?
When receiver turns off, it is usually due to badly connected/configured speakers. Try powering on the receiver without speakers.
