Similar problem here, although my 1930-24 use to read and copy to DVD's ok on my Compac XP system. Now the drive letter only shows it as a CD drive, and kicks out DVD's.

I believe this has happened before and it had to do with drive designation. But I have uninstalled the hardware, replaced the driver, etc. to no avail.

    Help?

This device is meant only for CDs. However, the drive is an internal CDRW with IDE interface. You can substitute some DVDRW drives, but some DVD drives are picky about voltage and amperage. This enclosure is on the weak side for most DVDRW drives. You'll want to find a DVDRW that can work on as low as 8VDC on the 12VDC line. And the drive can't draw any more than .75A on the 12VDC line either. If the drive requires higher amounts, yor system may only recognize the drive as being connected to your system, but it'll never have the power to read the disc, and just kick it out after spinning the disc around for a short time.

I got this Pacific Digital model 1930-24 in a yard sale. It needs a power supply/adapter. Where in canada can I purchase one and is this power supply common. I have a disc drive back up unit for my PC that...

Possibly not. It depends on what the power points are on the connector. The Pacific Digital 1930-24 uses the following pinout voltages: 1 = +12VDC ; 2 = +5VDC ; 3 = RTN/CMN ; 4 = +5VDC ; 5 = RTN/CMN. The pinout DOES NOT follow a clockwise or counter clockwise position. The pinout starts at the bottom with pin 1 by itself, above it is Pin 2 & 4 above that. On the opposite side is 3 with 5 on top. Or you can view the following image: http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/7204/minidin5p.gif
Again, that is the pinout for the socket on the 1930-24. Some iOmega external CDRWs have the +5VDC and RTN pins swapped. So they would not be a good alternative to use.

I have a HP External USB CD/DVD R/RW drive. Stopped working.

First, try a new USB cable. Two, try a different USB port (if using a hub, directly connect to the computer). Three, check if there are any updated drivers or firmware for the drive.

Cindy Wells
(also make sure that the external drive is self-powered that the cord is undamaged and the power isn't surging or going into a brown-out. If it is one of the new bus-powered DVD drives, make sure that the computer has a good power source (not on battery for a laptop).)

PC did not recognize internal or external dvd rw. After trying another internal thought it might be the connection on the mobo. uninstalled sp3 for xp. rolled back to an earlier date and now both dvds work great.

Can operate with CD ROM's. Won't recognize DVD's.

Sounds like the drive could be going bad. The way the laser reads DVDs vs. CDs is different, that is why you are able to read one, not the other. I had this happen to me, except the opposite. It could read DVDs, not CDs. Had to buy a new one, and all is well.

One day the drives worked, now they don't?

You might be experiencing the results of years of registry clutter accumulating. I would recommend you download a free copy of CCleaner from here:
http://www.ccleaner.com/download and follow these instructions to clear out some of the clutter. Your system might just right itself!
Read this review and it will help you to get some familiarity with this product. http://www.ccleanerdownload.org/piriforms-ccleaner-the-step-by-step-review-tutorial
There are few times when I recommend this type of cleaning, but it sounds like you would benefit from it. Make sure when you are asked if you want to back up your registry that you do so. And if you know how to create a new restore point, I would recommend you do that before running CCleaner for the first time. That way if you have any issues you can restore your system back to the settings you had in effect before running the application.
Good luck, and let me know how it works out!

Mad Dog USB DVD-RW not recognized

The firmware updates and drivers won't help you. You can try turning it off, disconnecting it from your PC, then turning off your PC, turning on the burner and then turning your PC back on and hope that it's recognized. The chances are slim as this is a known issue with Mad Dog external USB DVDRW's and you need to send it in for repair if it's under warranty or put it on eBay as broken (or throw it out) otherwise and get a new one. I have a Mad Dog external DVD-RW and ran into the same exact issue, for a while it was working on and off as long as I didn't turn the burner off while my PC was on but for a while now it's just recognized by the PC as mass storage device rather than the DVDRW that it is and when you reach that point the aforementioned two choices (repair or throwing it out\putting it on ebay) are the only ones you have.
