Question about Dell OptiPlex GX280 PC Desktop

Computer freezes up. Only unplug power cord can I reboot the computer.

Computer freezes up. trl-Alt-Del initiates nothing. Mouse is not moving. Holding the power button would not bring back the operation, only very loud fan moving. Only unplug power cord can I reboot the computer. Then the problem would repeat it self in about 20 minutes. This problem just started 2 days again, all of a sudden. Appreciate anyone who may offer advise on potential cause and fixes. Thanks

Thank you so much for the suggestions, A, B & C. I will try them. If you don't mind, I will let you know the outcome. About D, this Dell is about 3 year old and is not under warranty anymore.

I have the exact same problem with my Dell Optiplex GX280. I've tried A, B, and C. The problem with the fan blowing stopped when I unplugged the mother board from the power supply and plugged it back in however the system is still freezing up. On one occasion the computer froze while I was in the BIOS. Had to unplug and restart. And yes, my warranty ran out as well about 3 months ago.

The problem started after I updated to Spybot 1.5, not sure if that had anything to do with it. I managed to uninstall it but the problem persists.

Hi guys / gals. Identical problem here with a dell Optiplex GX280, started up around the same time. The fan doesn't always max out, but it freezes up the same. Also, it makes no difference whether the OS is reloaded, or I'm running a bootable linux live cd.

I have a GX280 that is having the same issue. I think the motherboard is at fault. A fresh image does nothing to resolve. Its definitely not the hard drive or software. As I putting a working HHD from another GX280 in it and it still does it.

One can only assume that Dell put in the fail chip in our machines to fail a few months after the warranty.

  1. Dell suggests upgrading audio drivers and flashing bios.
  2. I did both of these and problem reappeared after a while.
  3. Then I removed heatsink/fan assembly, cleaned all surfaces, applied good quality silver-loaded heatsink compound and reassembled
  4. PC has been running for more than a day with no probs so far

Hi Power Fan and judyblueyess,

I agree with IB4G2008. It certainly sounds like the Motherboard is cactus.

Updateing Spybot is co-incidental.

Let us know what happens with the 4 diagnostics outlined above..

Ok..sounds like a death knell for the motherboard. Try this first though.

A. boot from the install cd, to see if that works.

B. during the Dell image log on, use F2 to check your boot sequence settings.

C. during next round, as in B above, use F12, and run a disk analysis session.

D. still under warranty, by chance?

got backup?

Tip

Computer common problems easy fix.

The most common problem with computers is them freezing up.
When applications dont load or freeze up.
The easiest way to fix most problems is usually just the simple act of "rebooting" the computer.
Most of us already know that.
but just in case you dont heres how.
when the computer seems frozen and you seem to have waited longer for it to unfreeze than it takes for bread to toast.. you can try the following.
press and hold the crtl anf alt buttons and double tap the del button.
on older computers using windows 98- 2000 and millenium editions it will usually reboot the computer. also works with older versions.
with xp and vista you will usually fet a differernt screen that will allow you to choose various options.. choose restart.
another way is to click on the start button located on the bottom left of your screen and choose restart option. if the computer is so frozen that nothing works you can press and hold the power button unti lthe computer shuts down.. wait 30 seconds and turn the computer back on..if that doesnt work then you may have to turn of the power switch..but only if you have to..with laptops you will have to take out the battery. when the comp reboots the computer should be unfrozen..if not you will need more help ..just ask us..

Acer desktop PC locked up and now won't turn off or boot up

Hello,

I've seen a similar issue on Acer Veriton 7900. When you unplug the power chord while the machine is still running the BIOS/CMOS gets bugged up. If your PC doesn't have a 3 year warranty you can clear the CMOS/BIOS. To do this, note the following...

1.) Unplug the power cord

2.) Remove the CMOS battery from the unit

[OPTIONAL] move the jumper on the mainboard to the 'clear position' It should be indicated on your mainboard. After 30 seconds move jumper back on original position

3.) Wait for 30 seconds

4.) Place CMOS battery back into its position

5.) Reconnect the power cord and attempt to power on the unit.

When I restart the computer, the keyboard and mouse do not work. The mouse won't move the cursor and hit cntl alt del on keybourd and nothing happens. I have tries three mouses (one wireless) and two...

Use wired mouse and keyboard (not wireless) and change the USB port you are using to another one.

Connect them directly to the computer, do not use USB hubs.

If no joy reboot in safe mode: turn on your computer and immediately press F8 repeatedly until you get the Advanced Boot screen. Select "SAFE MODE" and press ENTER. After that, restart in normal mode.

Thank you

Windows XP won't load - black screen

Refresh all the connection on your motherboard like ATX power supply, HDD and CD/DVD ROM cables, and specially the RAM. You may have to clean the RAM as shown in the image below. c4d62f6.jpg
then hopefully your computer will return to normal. Hope this helps.

How do I reboot it? Compaq 5716 runs very slow Can't download anything paid for interent and the computer just freezes. I want to do a system restore where there is nothing on the computer like brand new.

There are different ways on how to reboot a computer. If your laptop is not operational like it's frozen or crashed with the mouse frozen, try the simple steps below:

1. The custom way to reboot your computer is to press and hold the power button until it shuts off. Then press the power again if you want to turn it back on.

2. If your computer is functional and you just want to reboot/restart it, click on Start then click on Turn Off and select Restart. It will restart your computer.

3. If you can't click on the Start button but your mouse is still functional, you can simply press the Ctrl + Alt + Del button on your keyboard to bring up the Task Manager. Then on the Task Manager window, click on Shutdown tab, then choose Restart.

4. If your computer wont turn off no matter what you do, like holding the power button and the steps above, try to unplug the power cable for few minutes then plug it back in. Try to turn on the computer again.

System Restore

Click on START > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

When you do System Restore, this feature will restore your computer's settings back to its normal or functional condition. You can just choose an earlier date where it was working fine. The good thing about system restore is it wont delete your recent saved files and data.

If you really want a clean hard drive/system like what you said (brand new), reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling Windows Operating System is what you need. You need your Windows installation CD to do it. Click on the links below on how to reinstall your Windows Operating System.

Why does my curor freeze up?

First I would replace the batteries. I had the same problem a couple of years ago. The solution for me was getting rid of McAfee AV. To check if it is your problem, use CTL-ALT DEL to turn McAfee off and see if that gets rid of your mouse freeze ups.
