DVD Drives not recognized in Win XP

I installed a new Segate USB drive today and installed the Drive manager software included on the drive. I then lost any recognition of my two DVD drives by the Windows XP OS. Even when going into Startup (F2) on a re-boot I found they weren't found.

I was going to run a System Restore, but found all previous SR's had been wiped out.

What do I need to do to get these two drives recognized by Windows again? Never had anything like this problem until today.

As I said ... For an unknown reason, my system restore points are gone. I can't do a system restore. I tried the "add hardware" route you suggested, but the DVD drives are not on the list and trying to add a new device brings up nothing. I can't use program disks (OS or any other) disks to help correct the problem because the computer can't read them ... It doesn't recognize the drives! Got it?

    Let's try something else.

  • Marmac6804 Feb 12, 2008

Cahnged the drive letter with no problem. However, the two DVD drives are not there and the computer still can't find them.
FYI .. These were origionally installed on the system when purchased.

    Lets try something else.

    Hi,

I am using a compaq pressario desktop with windows xp OS. I have inserted a CD into my DVD drive.. I was able to view the contents of that CD without any issue.. But when i tried to eject that CD, the CD Drive (G:) was not listed in "MY computer". Even am not able to open the drive with the open button in CPU. Could some one assist me in finding out what problem is it..

I can't even remember the sequence of events leading up to my complete loss of CD/DVD Rom Drives. Unfortunately, several household members use my computer for various reasons. All I can tell you is that my computer will NOT read that I have a Hitachi GD7500 DVD Rom and a Sony CD-RW installed. There are no conflicts. The device drivers says it has no location and I am unable to troubleshoot. A solution would be most helpful and welcomed. I am at my wits end.

I had a problem where my newly installed drive was not recognizing blank DVD's or RW-DVDs on Windows XP. I went to My Computer, and right clicked on the device and selected properties. On the "Recording" tab, I checked "Enable CD recording on this device" box. This fixed my problem. Roxio now recognizes that a blank disc is installed, and I can record to this disc.

There may be a conflict with the devices you had already on your system, try the following:
Right click on my computer > manage > double click on disk management > right click on disk1 (removable device) > change drive letter and paths > click on change and assign "D, E, H" for example.
Now you should be able to use that device.

Hi you could try doing this goto controll panel then add hardware devices then let your computer scan for devices when its finished it will give you a list of devices connected to your computer scroll down the list untill you find the devices you want working then select it if you have the disks that came with it put it in and select have disk if not dont check this box then you can let the computer scan for the correct software it will look on the net for this software and should locate and istall it for you failing this i would try to use restore as this should still have the previous settings saved at a previous date let me know how you get on ok

My dvd player used to work now it doesn't even show one is in the computer what doi Do?

Hi Maverick,

Can you get to device manager to see if your drive is installed and recognized by the system.
In windows 7/vista click start and type in 'device manager' in XP click start -> right cick on My computer and select properties and navigate to the device manger tab.

There will be a list of hardware installed in the list and you should find your drive under DVD/CD ROM drives. If there is a yellow exclamation mark - you need to update the drivers using the CD that came with the drive.

If the drive is not showing up in device manager you need to take your comp to a service center as there may be a fault with the controller.

Rhino.

Troubleshooting
page 26 LaCie Slim DVD±RW USB 2.0 Drive User’s Manual
The Issue
The drive is not
recognized.
Questions to Ask
Is the drive’s power on?
Does an icon for the drive appear
on the computer (On a Mac a CDROM
must be inserted in the drive)?
Are all of the cables connected
securely and correctly?
Are both ends of the USB 2.0 cable
connected and properly seated?
Possible Solutions
Check to see that all of the power cords are properly
connected and that the switch on the rear of the drive is
turned on. If you are using a surge protector, make sure that
it is switched on, too.
Check for an icon on the Desktop (on a Mac) or in My
Computer (on a PC).
Make sure that all the steps in section 2. Getting Connected
have been followed correctly. Examine the connections
carefully to ensure that all the cables are inserted in the
correct orientation and in the correct location.
Check both ends of the USB 2.0 cable. Disconnect them, wait
10 seconds, and reconnect them. If the drive is still not
recognized, restart your computer and try again.
The Issue
The drive is not
recognized.
Questions to Ask
Is there a conflict with other device
drivers or extensions?
Possible Solutions
Mac OS 9.x Users: If your LaCie drive is not being
recognized by the recording software, you may be
experiencing an extension conflict between the software and
iTunes or Disc Burner. There are two possible solutions to this
problem.
If you do not plan on using iTunes or Disc Burner, follow these
steps:
1) From the Apple Menu, go to Control Panels and open the
Extensions Manager.
2) Scroll down to the Extensions folder and disable (uncheck)
the USB Authoring Support and the FireWire Authoring
Support.
3) Click on the Restart button to restart your computer.
4) Launch the recording software again, and check to see if it
recognizes the drive now.
If you plan on using both the recording software and iTunes
or Disc Burner, you may want to create a separate Extension
Set for the recording software.
1) From the Apple Menu, go to Control Panels and open the
Extensions Manager.
2) Press the Duplicate Set button.
3) Give the new Extension set a name, such as Writing.
4) Scroll down to the Extensions folder, and disable (uncheck)
the USB Authoring Support and the FireWire Authoring
Support.
5) Click on the Restart button to restart your computer.
Now when you want to use this set, simply go back into
Extensions Manager, and from the pull-down menu from
Selected Sets:, choose your new Extension set.

I need the GP08LU10 XP driver

USB optical drives never require a driver when used in Windows XP. This device is 100% Plug 'n Play in Windows XP providing it's a good drive and plugged into a working USB port. The OS will detect and install a USB drive automatically without user intervention within 4-7 seconds normally. When it does so, you will get notification that the install was successful and that the drive is now ready to use.

If it has never been prepped, ie: partitioned and formatted, then that task will need to be performed using drive prep software usually provided by the vendor/manufacturer or by using the built-in partitioning and formatting feature that Microsoft included with the OS.

Dvd read problem

Check the firmware first in the device manager
1. Right click on my computer and choose manage.
2. Under Computer Management, Click on Device Manager
3. Check the dvd/cd-rw device and check if it has a yellow exclamation point or an x mark on it.
-if it has an x mark. you just need to enaeble it or install the updated driver or firmware for your dvd drive but if none or it has an exclamation point continue the steps below:

DELETE upper and lower FILTERS in the Registry Editor
1.Click on Start. Then type in run or the search box, REGEDIT
then click on regedit. A new window will appear which is the registry editor.
2. Click on the plus sign for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
3. Click on the plus sign on SYSTEM
4. Click on the plus sign on CURRENTCONTROLSET
5. Click on the plus sign on CONTROL
6. Click on the plus sign on CLASS
7. Click on the FOLDER for (4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318)
8. On the left pane you should see the UPPER FILTERS or the LOWER FILTERS or BOTH. DELETE BOTH if possible. Right click on it and click on deleter. Once deleted go back to device manager
9.Click the plus sign On the dvd/cd drive in the device manager, and Right click on the firmware and choose uninstall.
10. Click on ACTION in the device manager and choose scan for hardware changes.
-It should automatically detect and install the firware for your dvd drive. You should be able to play any dvd again.

-This problem might be happening because your firmware for the dvd drive is interfering with the burning software that you installed on the system which is NERO.
-Your feedback will be appreciated. Thanks.

HP CD/DVD optical drive is not recognized

I found that there was a firmware conflict caused by the installation of iTUNES. I uninstalled and cleared the upper and lower filters in the registry and the internal DVD-Rom is recognized. First I cleared the registry and the drive was recognized after a hard boot. So Far no twitches. Knock on wood.
