'99 silverado will turn over but won't start. I have a new battery, 6 month old starter, new plugs, new distributor cap and rotary button. I used to be able to turn the ignition on and off real quick and it would start, now this doesn't even help. Once it starts it would continue to start fine the rest of the day. Any suggestions?

    100,000 miles on odometer.

How many miles are on the car??? Sounds as if your ignition switch is faulty, but it's hard to tell with the info i currently have.

I'd start with one of these and move on to the next.

Fuel
Spark.

Is it getting fuel? You should have an "in tank" electric fuel pump. When you turn the key halfway (just before turning the engine/starter over), you should hear the fuel pump prime. Easy way to check is to look in the throttle body while someone turns the key to the "on" position. You should see/smell the fuel. You can also listen to the gas tank while the key gets turned. You should hear the fuel pump run.

To check spark, pull a spark plug out, put it back on the plug wire and rest the electrode end of the plug up against the engine or exhaust manifold and have someone turn the engine over. You should see the spark plug firing. Don't hold the plug or wire while doing this. You'll get zapped if it's working ok.

If these both check out ok, then take a look at your firing order. If it's off by a significant amount, it may not fire. I've seen this happen when a cap/rotor/wires were changed and the wire/rotor was not positioned on the correct cylinder. (Most of the time they will at least fire or backfire, but either not stay running or run REALLY badly if the firing order is off.

Testimonial: "Thanks for the advice. I don't think it has to do with the firing order. the distributor and rotary were changed after the problem.I'll chk. firing."

Ignition Timing procedure on 99 ford 3.0 v6

How-do-you-do Corey Bell,

TDC
(top-dead-center) on the crank... passes twice
(2 revolutions) for each turn of the Distributer...

So yes...

You COULD be 180 degrees out of timing...
(that's only a 50 - 50 chance... how you might have
skewed this situation... ).

Don't let's pass up the possibility the your REPLACEMENT
motor could be EVERY BIT as "problematic" as your old
engine...

WOULD that you were more FORTH-COMMING with
year & model information... I might be able to cite
RESOURCES that would give US a CLUE as to what
ELECTRICAL configuration we might be using...

Just for YUKS... You should look at the FREE circuit
drawings ( & tech service bulletins) available to you ...

BBB INDUSTRIES ...

Hope this helps

I have a Chevy 2500 pick up truck. My son thought he'd replace the spark plugs. He removed the distributor cap, didn't understand it and now the truck won't start. He did not replace any spark...

firing order for 5.7 v8 is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 mostly all of the chevy v8s are the same firing order. the rotor button in distributer turns clockwise, the cylinder numbers are 1-3-5-7 on drivers side, 2-4-6-8 is on passengers side. To get started get your distrutor cap[new one] look on the top you will see a #1that's where you begin you must know if if rotates clockwise or counter clockwise start in that direction then follow the firing order and cylinder line up. good-day!! if cap is not marked, just pull out #1 plug, put a straw or similar in plug hole on top of piston. turn engine over by crank in front of vehicle with a wrench, when the piston comes to the very top just before it starts going down. this is tdc. and rotor button should be pointing to #1 wire on dist, cap. follow from there. good-day !!

1984 diesel silverado 6.2. Engine turns over, won't start?

Please check the fuel, fuel filter and the fuel pressure at the pump. If this is low then you will need to calibrate the pump. Also check the heaters and the injectors, if they have not been replaced for a long time you can check the injectors for blocks.

good luck have fun...remember if you don't think you can do it, It's better to take it to a shop than to destroy an entire engine.

Where is the rotore /cap located in a 1999 silverado 4.8

I believe those motors have a distributorless ignition system. Each cylinder has a coil mounted on top of the valve cover.

My 1999 nissan altima won't start, no crank, not even a click. All lights are ok, stereo, wiper, etc. battery is only months old. I pulled out the starter, have it tested at Advance Auto Parts and it worked...

It is possible that the neutral safety switch needs to be replaced. This is on the transmission where the shifter connects to it. Unfortunately it could also be some of the other problems mentioned too , but as I only have this question locked to me for 30 min, could you possibly give me some more time and I will come back to you asap on how you can test this switch first and go from there.

Thank you for your patience
