JVC AV-48WP30 problem starting up

A little over a year ago, like most people, I was having with my JVC AV-48WP30 and convergence. After replacing and upgrading the STK392s and resistors, the picture was perfect and convergence no longer an issue.

Over the last year, however, the TV has been experiencing some issues when starting up. I joke to my kids that when I was a kid, we had to wait for our TV to “warm up” the tubes before we could get a picture. When the delay in getting a picture moved from a few minutes to a few days, the walk down nostalgia lane has become quite annoying (and requiring us to just leave the TV on which waste power).

I have attached a few pictures of what the TV looks like until it starts working. Usually by letting it warm up and repeatedly turning it on and off it finally syncs and we get a perfect picture. Until then, we will either get what you see on the screen or sometimes what looks like a color test pattern of just vertical colored lines. In all cases, the menus and audio works just fine (other than being distorted of course).

Any thoughts on what the issue might be? When the TV works, it works flawlessly.

If I recall, I purchased this around 6 years ago so it's well out of warrantee.

What is a "uP" and is it something that I can replace?

  • rcovington Feb 11, 2008

So from a board level, if I replaced the Control Board and whatever that board is that has the convergence chips on it, is the general feeling this would resolve the issue?

In terms of an interface cable, what type is it?

    Thanks

If the TV works sometimes, i would suspect that there are some solder defects on or around the STK392s ICs. Check the low resistors for cold solder joints, if everything looks good, it may be time to replace those STKs again.

Hello could be that the programing on the chip needs to updated. Call JVC and ask them if there is a firmware upgrade to resolve the issue

The old video card has seen better days, methinks. All those symptoms lead one to conclude it needs a 'substitute' to enter the field, or call a long TV time out(too much pro and super bowl isms, eh?)..

Are you planning on doing this yourself?

and, the uP may be having a bad day. Seems you may wish to engage the services of a qualified field tech(still under warranty, I hope)

uP is microprocessor, and I'm almost certain that's embedded on the system control board, NOT in a slot holder, like in PC's. Plus, it's very sensitive to ESD(electrostatic discharge) so it's not considered a FRU(Field Replacement Unit). Only way I know is to replace the control board, with that uP installed already.

JSPCexpress has a good point. But that process requires an interface cable with your computer(hope you have one handy)..

usually the interface cable would be serial bus, unless you get lucky and it's USB. But most are serial D type, 9 or 25 pin types. Sometimes, though rarely, it's a coax, but that's not likely with your model.

Yes, the system level board has a variety of functions, like a motherboard in your computer, but not that much horsepower(since the TV don't need all those software devices).

This is not too hard, just takes a keen eye and a steady hand.

Hope this is helping you out, and you might consider doing the FixYa watusi with our help.

IC's for JVC AV-48WP30

you need two STK392-110 convergence ICs. You can get them at the following link with free instructions on how to replace them. They actually have the repair kit for your model which contains both convergence ICs and the convergence resistors.
Heres the link.

JVC AV-48WP30 48 in. Rear... Problem

Your convergence I.C's ( integrated circuits ) Have failed. Replace Both I.C's with Stk392-150's. The unit is equipped with 110's. These are large IC's pn the convergence board located near the front of the unit. You need soldering/desoldering experience to do this job. I would recommend seeking professional assistance.

There might be some features that the universal remotes aren't able to do. To perform the convergence alignment you should have the original remote.
Do you have the user manual or service manual?
The service manual will explain this process better.
