Question about HP Pavilion zv6005us Notebook

ZV5370US Optical drive no longer works

The DVD stoped working after trying to burn a DVD. I can hear the head move when I insert a disk but I can't hear the drive spin up. What are the chances the drive just died and there are no other issues that would cause this problem?

    Thanks for the reply SirHanz,
I have tried several different disk with the same results, no spinup. I suspect the cost of labor to troubleshoot the drive would approach the cost of a replacement drive. So the gamble is to just buy a drive and hope there are no other issues, or sent the laptop to a service center.

Those chances are pretty high, although I would try testing with different discs, and types of discs. In example dvds, cd's, I don't recomend CD or DVD R RW discs though, they are generally harder for the drive to read. Also with the cost of replacement laptop parts you may consider trying to have it serviced before accepting defeat and replacing the unit.

My acer aspire 5517 dvd does not work

Ask yourself the following questions
1. When did I last use the drive? see (a)
2. Does the disk work in another drive? (b)
3. Can I read other DVD's
4. Is the disk an original or a home made disk
(a) If you have not used it for a long time or for ever, it may be a dirty lens. To Clean this, you should use a DVD lens cleaner, the best type are those that come with a spray bottle of solution that you spray on the cleaning hairs on the bottom side of the DVD. follow the instruction.
(b) If the disk works in another drive, that could indicate there is an issue with your drive - either dirty or faulty try cleaning it
If you have tried this and still you are unable to read a disk, check with another computer that you can read the disk? see (d)
Listen to the laptop after closing the disk draw with the DVD in it, you should hear the drive spin up, and in most cases you can hear the drive move as the lens moves to read the disk. if you are not hearing both of these you may have a faulty drive. If you turn off your laptop and turn it over, look at the screws on the bottom of the laptop and you will notice one near where the DVD goes in that looks different to the rest, this is the DVD drive locking screw, if you have a friend that has the same machine or similar you can swop the drives and test, this will confirm if the drive is faulty or if it is something else.
DVD drives normally fail through being bent (when being pushed in or dropped) over use or lack of use, the latter is due to dust and is easily fixed as above.
(c) if you can read other disks in your drive, chances are there is a fault with the disk not the DVD drive, look for finger prints, scratches and clean if necessary. If it is readable in another drive and it is yours, make a copy and use that.
(d) If it is an original disk, check for scratches and marks etc. if it is home made like a data disk or music disk etc. Burn another if you can.

Cannot play dvd disk

Many probable reasons.
-You put dvd disk in a cd reader
-The Dvd disk is unreadable(full of scratch at the bottom)
-The Dvd reader is not identified by your computer.

1st identify what the reason is.
Then reply

Hope this helps. Thank you for using Fixya!

The laptop will not read the CD inserted in the optical drive

Hi there.

To narrow this down, try a different CD or DVD. If it's working with another disk, then your problem is likely that the disk is scratched or broken. If it doesn't, then it could be a hardware problem.

To rule out a software problem, go to Start > My Computer, then double click on your DVD Drive. Make sure the disk is in it. If it doesn't recognize it, then the problem is with the optical drive itself. The first thing I would suggest is going to Start > Control Panel > Device Manager, removing your optical disk drive then restarting the computer.

If this doesn't fix the problem then your disk drive may have overheated or the laser lens inside needs to be cleaned. However, unless you know what you're doing, this should really be done by a service technician. You can cause permanent damage to your Notebook if you don't know what you're doing inside of it.

Dell 600 is my laptop am using now all other function like cd,vcd is playing but only dvd not playing

You want to check and see if it is only dvds you have burned or do commercial dvds also not work?.

If the dvds won;t work but the cd's work then this is typical of how laptop optical drives age or fail. The alignment on the heads goes out and because the dvd's require more accuracy to be used they start showing either error's, longer and longer read time, or not being able to read them at all. If you were burning dvd's or cd's on this then you should have also seen a lot of burn errors and perhaps the dvd's didn't want to work on other computers.

Eventually the cd's will not want to work as well This takes longer as they don't need as much accuracy from the drive to read.

You can easily replace the drive with a new one for about $65-$85. It is definitely something you can do yourself. You undo one screw that holds the drive in, slide it out, slide the new one in, put the screw back in and you are done. Here's the trick you need to buy the parts from a laptop repair place not Dell. You can get the same drive but waaaaay cheaper. If you do a search for laptop repair parts with google/bing there will be hundreds. Just find one close to you or one with a good price for the optical drive. Keep an eye out for either pictorial or video instructions on changing the drive. It really is as simple as I have described.

Unfortunately your symptoms are typical of optical drives failing from all laptop manufacturers. Actually they are the same for desktops but those last longer before they have problems. Replacement is the only thing that fixes this.

The cd drive cannot be seen on My Computer though, the dvd drive is available and functional. I have tried a million fixes and nothing works. I had this same problem years ago and a dell representative...

The clicking noise is from the laser head moving while it tries to read the disk. And since the unit is recognized by Windows (otherwise you wouldn't be able to view dvd's) it's not a software problem. The cd part (the laser or the lens) is faulty, worn out. This is unfixable, the optical unit must be replaced.

When i try to copy dvd it keeps telling me to insert blank disc even though one is in there i can burn cds but not dvd it tells me to put in writeable disk and ive put in dvdr-w and dvd-r and still it...

Go to the device manager to insure your optical drive is in fact a DVD/RW. You should also be able to tell by looking at the front of the drive and see what it says. If it says CD Writable or DVD Rom, you cannot do it. Kind of sounds like you have a CD/RW-DVD Rom combination drive, which does not allow the burning of DVD's.

Let me know, OK.
