Try removing the HD from the external caddy and mount it into a new enclosure, then you will know if your HD is gone or was just the caddy.

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

You need to format the hard drive to FAT32 and then copy your 80Gb of music files to this hard drive.

My brother-in-law gave us a laptop and an external WD harddrive. He couldn't remember his password for the external drive (hint: goof) and he has since passed away. I don't want to just reformat the drive...

download a program call ERD. I don't remember if i had to pay for it or not but should be able to read the information off this drive with it. (usually have to boot from the ERD disk)

When I plug my my Hitachi SDM/205 250GB Simple Drive into the usb port a pop-up window appears and says that it needs to be reformatted. Have I lost my data?

Yes, but there are many recovery software that you can download from the internet.... so don't worry, try 4shared.com by searching Recover My Files which is very effective. Please note to format your HDD using Quick Format rather than Full Format.. Good luck..

WD passport fried I think. Can I reformat?

Well in this case, formatting should no be performed. the Western Digital data recovery tool should be taken a try first of all. If it doesn't help, then take the device for data recovery services if the data is really important to you.

Remember - DO keep the deivice safe from data overritten or physical damage. Regards.

LaCie 200GB HD is now ''read-only''. Recommends reformatting.

>> my computer could not repair the hard drive

It seems that the disk-drive is "dying", and the "table of contents" on the hard-drive has become corrupted, and automated attempts to "repair" the corruption have failed.

>> the hd is being offered with limited functionality, basically read-only.

Yes. Take this as a "hint" that the disk-drive is about to "die".

>> It recommends that I back-up the info elsewhere

Good advice. Take the advice.

>> and reformat.

This may help -- it will identify any "bad" spots on the hard-drive, and will either permanently avoid using those bad spots, or it will allocate a "spare" track on the drive to be used as a substitute for the "bad" area.

However, even after doing this, I would not "trust" the device to be a "reliable" backup for my important files. Like a well-used chalk-board in a classroom, the disk is getting "worn-out".

If it's still under warranty, exercise the warranty.
If the warranty has expired, replace it.

Drive crashed and is showing unallocated space

You can use a program like Data Recovery Wizard which is able to recover the file system and files of a partition which has been reformatted. I believe they have a trial you can download that may do the job.

Otherwise the program costs several hundred dollars, and it would be better to take it to a PC shop for drive recovery.

Know that I have not used the program, nor the company, and of course do not endorse them - however, this program would seem to be your fix. As I cannot speak to the reliability of that particular program, I can only say to be careful and hopefully you can recover everything you need.

I need instructions on how to use purchased external storage unit purchased, no instructions included

Because the reformat or restore process erases everything on your computer, it is critical to have a backup of any important files on your computer. You will also need your original software install disks to reinstall any software you have purchased.
  • Write down or print out all notes and internet pages because once the format process begins, you will no longer have access to them (or anything else in the PC)
  • As already stated, BACKUP all important files and data! When you reformat your computer everything will be erased!
  • Make sure you have all the CDs and other software. All programs will have to be reinstalled after you format the hard drive. Don't forget about software that came with hardware such as printers, scanners, etc.
  • Write down the brand and information for all the hardware on your computer. Look in the Device Manager and make note of the brand and model of network adaptors, video cards, sound cards, printers, modems, and displays. After reformatting you might need this information to reinstall drivers. You might want to read from this site http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313348
