Question about Thermador Ovens
We have a 16 yr old Thermador CT 230 double wall oven (220v). Recently we went to bake something and neither oven would heat up. We called a local authorized repair person, who pulled the oven out of the wall (using an oven dolly), dismanted the cooling vent stack, and reached his arm in and physically turned the cooling fan. As soon as he did this, the fan worked, and the heating elements began to heat. At that point, the repair person declared that the fan, motor, and airflow switch would need to be replaced because they were probably "gummed" up, and couldn't be cleaned. He estimated the total cost would be nearly $600. Feeling helpless, we told him to go ahead. The parts are on order at this time. However, since he manually freed the cooling fan, the oven continues to operate normally. We now realize that he didn't even pull the protective covers off to see if in fact the fan was really dirty beyond the point of cleaning. So now we have several questions: 1) Should he have tried to fully examine the fan to see if it was too dirty to try to clean it? 2) Is it even a smart move to invest $600 in a 16 yr old oven even though an equivalent replacement is over $3,000? 3) We watched pretty carefully and know we could gain access to the controls and electronics just as the repair person did, should we try to simply clean this fan ourselves if fails again? We'd really appreciate your advice.
No, do not try it yourself. When the motor is bad sometimes it won't have the power to start itself. With a push it will take off. If you try to remove it yourself you will risk damaging cabinet, the oven itself, floors and/or yourself. Please trust your repairman. We are trained and experienced. Not everyone Is out to get you!
