It could be many things in this model.

Check the paper guides in the tray. If they are loose the paper could skew and cause the paper to fold over or damage on the edge.

Check for obstructios a piece of paper for example where the paper exits the tray or where it exits the fuser (hot section at the rear) are the most likely.

Do I load the original for faxing right side up or upside down? HP officejet v40

Look at the input tray it shows a symbol of an original.

If the lines on the symbol face you , then put the paper in face UP.
If the lines are on the folded corner of the symbol, then place the paper in face DOWN.

If you are still not sure, place the paper in face UP and press "COPY"
If it copies the page, then that is the correct orientation.

If thre copy is blank, repeat the copy test with the document face DOWN.

Faxing up or down

Look at the hopper. It will almost certainly have a little graphic on it to tell you which way up the document goes.

If it looks like a sheet of paper with lines of writing on, the paper goes in print side up.

If it looks like a sheet of paper with one corner folded over, and lines of writing visible only on the turned over corner, then it goes in print side down.

If you can't find the graphic, then experiment: Take a blank sheet of paper. Write "Up" on one side and "Down" on the other then stick it into the machine so the writing is telling the truth. Most fax machines have a copy mode - use this to see which side of the paper the machine reads (if you can't get it to copy, fax your page to somebody and get them to phone back to tell you which side of the page they've received).

Crooked Cpoies

Pull all of the paper out of paper tray and reload. More than likely you will find some sheets on the bottom that are folded at the corners. This will cause crooked copies and also jams.

Corners folding while copying

if it is just folding the paper back without pressing it, then its a problem in the fuser. Paper sticking to long to the upper fuser roller and catching either a pick off finger or a mylar on the exit of the fuser.
Hope that helps...

Bell & Howell Copiscan Spectrum corner problems

It can be a nightmare to find out what is causing the dog ear page or folded page at the corner. Check your glass **** inside the scanner to make sure its seated in the scanner properly. The big one is the check the metal paper guides in the scanner paper path. If a guide is bend it will hook the paper and cause it to fold over.
