My Nextar Q3 is a few years old and when I was trying to charge the battery while in my car the screen went blank and stopped giving directions. I tried restarting the unit but the screen went on briefly...

you need to open it and check the wires behind the power board sometimes those wires get loose from the solder weld the battery its ok if you have it connected to your car lighter, I had that happen to me so I opened it and found broken solder welds at the end of those wires, it is a very delicate work to get to it but I think that's what it is.

Sounds like the backlight has burned out. It happens, and suddenly just like you described. Just in case, try doing a master reset by powering the unit on while holding doen the 1st softkey (the one on the bottom left closest to the power button). If that doesnt work, send it in to Raymarine for repair.

I just posted a problem and solution for this unit.
In short the connection goes bad between the upper battery contacts and the metal
spikes that go through the case and make contact with the main circuit board in the
front half of the unit.
I simply used a pocket flat screw driver to twist the battery spring so it would hopefully
"file" into the nail head.
If that doesn't fix it you may have to take the unit apart and bend the metal contact fingers up
so that they make better contact with the "nails" from the back half of the case.
I would also take a pocket knife and scrap the nails and the spring metal to improve the contact.

I just fixed mine 10 minutes ago....
