It MIGHT be that the unit is no good. The downside of ALL IN ONE products. BUT, unplug the power cord from the back of the all in one, then unplug the USB cable, then unplug power cord from wall. Wait 10 minutes and plug everything back in in reverse order and see if it works. If not it is bad.

HP 4500...when trying to scan, or make a copy, screen displays "Scanner Failure" and will not work. Please help.

The "Scanner Failure" message appears when the scanner unit doesn't responds to the commands from the printer's processor. This is a major hardware failure - the scanner unit is effectively dead.
Replacing the failed scanner unit with a new one would cost more than a new All-in-One so either use the printer as is (just as a simple printer) or sell it for parts and get a new one.

My HP Photosmart C5240 will print from computer but will not scan or make copies.

Is there any error message displayed on the control panel of the printer just like one of the following:
Scanner failure, power off and on
Scanner System Failure
Scanner failed, cannot make copies or fax
Scanner failure. Unable to scan, copy, or send a fax
Scanner failure, cycle power

You may want to try following these steps:
1. Check if the scanner light does turn on when you initiated the scanning process, if not you need to reset the product.
2. Try using your other electrical outlet because your AVR or Surge Extension may not be providing enough voltage for the printer.
3. Try using dirty cycle, meaning you need to directly cut the power of your printer by pulling of the power cord from the rear side of your printer and wait for about 30 seconds before inserting again and turn it on.

If all these steps do not improve your printer functionality, you may want to call the HP online help and ask for replacement.

The error message reads: "Scanner failure. Turn power off the on again." When I do that, it just gives the same error message again.

You have a bad scanner unit. Getting it repaired will cost as much as buying a new machine.
