Question about Kitchen Ranges
The oven is controlled by an Electronic Range Control (ERC). This is the clock assembly on the range. The surface elements are powered by infinite switches and do not go through the ERC. That explains why the clock assembly is dead, your oven does not work, but your surface elements do. You need to replace the ERC. If you can provide me with a model number (located near the oven door or bottom drawer opening on most ranges, on the back of the console on some) I can determine what type of ERC you need and how much it might cost you. Post back with comments and let me know if I can be of further assistance. I hope this helps you.

Same problem happened to me last week. Kenmore electric stove only 3 years old. Repairman replaced electronic board ($400 on warranty, thank god), saying it is a continual problem with these stoves and is likely due to to power surges. Said it is an engineering defect. So my question to anyone - how do we prevent this from happening again? Use a Power bar like i do on my computer?

This may be due to one half of your circuit breaker being tripped or if you have cartridge or screw in fuses in your electric panel, then you need to be sure you have both halves of the 240v to your range.
There may also be a fuse in the range up at the controls that blew.
You will have to take covers off the back to see.
Being a digital readout, power surges can cause damage to sensitive electronics.
Sometimes you can see burned circuit boards etc. by examining closely.
