Question about JVC AV-48WP30 48" Rear Projection Television

3 Answers

Convergence chips I'll just start by saying I'm no TV repair man, but I can solder with the best of them. I have recently started repairing broken big screen TVs for fun. I have replaced convergence chips in 4 different TVs, all different models. Two TVs worked just fine and the other two smoked resistors next to the convergence chips. My question is: What am I doing wrong? Is this typical? Thank you, Heath

I have a convergence problem and need to know where the board is located on a JVC AV48WP30

  • Anonymous Mar 26, 2014

I am using my old vcr to send an analogue signal to other TVs in the house - but the output signal is clashing with the aerial signal and causing snowy images on the other Tvs

The convergence board for the JVC AV48WP30 is located a the front of the TV. Remove the grill from the front of the TV. I believe you will find it on the left hand side. The convergence ICs (STK392-110) are located on the black heat sinks. I replaced my ICs with STK392-180 and blew up my board. The replacement board from is $200.00. If you are going to replace your ICs I suggest replacing them with the original part numbers. I hope this helps you.

The convergence IC or in a sense ,amplifiers and the resistor are output resistors... if they are burning up the current going through them is spiking too high... TO me this is an indication that the "convegence yokes" are shorted. These are coils around the tubes that control convergence. I would suspect maybe that these are shorted to ground somehow. This is my first guess for this problem

I adjust the convergance cross but there is only one the moves. how do i get the rest to adjust?

If you are not able to adjust one of the Red, Blue colors you may have an open resistor(s) or one of the convergence ICs is bad.
One of the ICs and a bunch of resistors can also go bad at the same time, and it is recommended to replace both ICs even if only one color circuit is bad.
There are convergence kits which include resistors and two STK392-*** ICs available for certain TV sets.
To do the repair you need either the complete kit or find out which resistors are bad and the 2 big ICs STK392-*** the last *** 3 digits could be 110,120, 150 etc..
You de solder and remove the STK ICs and resistors if they need to be replace, install and solder the new parts, adjust the convergence
Doing this repair can be very difficult in some TVs it all depends on the layout and design of the TV and how hard to get to the convergence circuit. I have seen experienced Technicians making mistakes and even damaging the TV.
I have heard a non TV techs did this kind of repair and due, to the 1000s Volts danger of the high voltage inside the TV I suggest, to hire a TV man to do the repair can go from $200 and up.

I wish you the best..

Blinking green light on a mitsubishi rear projection tv

This sounds like your convergence chips have gone out. If you open the back of The set you will see a big metal piece with fins on it on the front side the convergence chips are located. When these go they usually take out several fuses on the power board they must be repalced along with your convergence ICs get the letters and numbers off of the chips they will start with the letters STK you can order a set of them from suburban electronics for around $20 there will be soldering involved with this repair if you can solder this is a easy fix that will cost you less than $40

The tv works but the picture is distorted all around the outer edges of the screen, and what you can see looks alittle blurry.

This is a convergence problem. you can try to re converge it with flash focus button on TV or in the menu if there is an option for convergence or focus. If you get into this menu and the lines will not move in all directions to line them all up you will have to replace I/C chips on convergence board inside TV. Do you know how to solder? if not this type of repair will typically cost $300 to $450 for a repair man. Let me know if this helps. Please reply to this solution if you have further questions or need assistance replacing I/C chips. I can help walk you through process if you feel comfortable with soldering and circuit boards. If you feel you can repair yourself with guidance from fixya should cost less than $50 to fix.

HD 1080 Series (WD-55809) - Color convergence issue

I don't know of illustrated instructions but I can provide you with the service manual for your TV. It does have illustrations of disassembly and components as well as schematics. Your set very likely needs new convergence IC chips. This is a common problem with all projection TVs. The repair is not expensive ($60-75 in parts)  but does involve unsoldering and removing the old chips and soldering in new ones. Some times there are some fuses that need to be replaced as well. If you want the manual provide me with an email address.

My 52 inch RCA projection TV has the picture wide on top and small at the bottom..what can cause this and how can it be fixed??

This sounds like a problem with "convergence" of the TV. The convergence circuitry performs the electronic aiming of the Red, Blue & Green projectors. Typical convergence problems result in distorted images on the screen such as: double or triple images on part or all of the screen, wavy lines, curled edges, excessive red, green or blue color or tint, etc. Sometimes, convergence issues can be corrected in a menu setting of the TV that has to do with "Picture Settings" or "Advanced Settings".

If the colors are out of alignment a great deal or went out "all of a sudden" it will probably not be repairable via the menu adjustment described above - but is certainly worth trying.

If it does not straighten out with the menu adjustment, it will probably require replacement of the convergence integrated circuit(s) chips located in the TV. This was a "big ticket" repair years ago, but can be done sometimes for as little as $40 in parts. Don't let the low price fool you though.. It can easily take several hours (or more) to access, remove & replace the components and reassemble the TV. Soldering skills are a must - and I'm not talking about soldering plumbing pipes here either. These are delicate electronic parts and need a 15 - 30 watt soldering iron and de-soldering braid or "solder ******" and LOTS of patience to perform CORRECTLY. As such, it is "not a DIY project" unless you're willing to risk turning your TV into a large floor model paper weight. If you decide to attempt this repair, you should google your TV brand and model along with the term "convergence". Parts, costs and procedures vary by TV. Unplug the TV for a day or so before starting the work to let capacitors discharge fully - just to be safe. Lastly, if you're going to attempt the repair - don't forget to purchase silicone heat sink compound - it is an absolute *must*!

Sony Rear Projection KP-53HS20 distorted multi colored screen

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit from the link below.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on - TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from

Toshiba big screen The tv is like double exposed . I have a toshiba big screen tv and I have double images in red and green. How do I fix this problem?

This is likely your convergence ICs(chips). If you can bump it then the ICs (chips) are still ok, it just needs resoldering.
my company charges $300-400 for the full repair (replacing ICs, full realignment plus cleaning)
if you can find a company that will resolder for you, it could cost $100-200 maybe. if you are a handy person with soldering skills, you could repair yourself. i can instruct if needed, but convergence IC soldering requires decent soldering skills. you will find the ICs on the largest heatsink in the tv. the part number starts with STK. if you replace them, check the resistors in front of them and replace accordingly. most toshiba will blow up to 3 fuses (f850, f851, f852)

Toshiba convergence

There are kits available online, which include the chips and the soldering iron too.......Just a word of caution, convergence chip replaced is more difficult on Toshiba #1 the chips face other boards that must be remove first. the main one is the convergence generator (which the sheild is soldered in placed) Also the signal board (which is what everythings mounted to is very fragile)..............Good Luck
