Palm M515 hot sync problem

I've been using this item for 1 year. Now suddenly it won't hot sync. The connection to the cradle is USB. the setup only shows Com 1 option. But I never had trouble before. I've done a hard reset, reinstalled palm desktop and unconnected, reconnected USB cable between reboots. Any other help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Bill Higbee
I have a similar problem. I have 3 palm m515 and the 2 sync fine and the 3rd on the same cradle won't sync. The computer wont even recongnise it and the ensuing message is "the connection between your handheld computer and the desktop could not be established. Please check your setup and try again". What do I do?

what do you mean by the "lead" is this the connection to the cradle?

Why would the firmware not work not but it did before?

I would uninstall all palm software then when there are no drivers installed for the palm connect it to your pc, do you get a new hardware found pop up or not? If you don't try a difrent usb port, if you still dont. try a difrent pc

finaly if it doesnt work even on another pc then the cable or cardle is broken, or maybe the connector on bottom of the palm isnt working anymore.

let me know how it turns out.

I think this is a problem in the connection medium only i think.

try some different thing.

also since u have even reinstalled the problem of software can be ruled out.

there is some kind of hardware problem for sure.

Hi,

It could be that something has malfuntioned which includes the cable...the connectors on the cradle or on the palm. Look and see that all pins are in it's proper position and none are twisted or missing.

Hi you could either have a problem with the lead witch is the cheapest problem to solve the other problem is with the palm top itself if this is the case then you will need to send it off to get the firmware updated you cant do this yourself because you cant get the correct software to do this you might even need to put the device in recovery mode to install the latest firmware so it will need sending off to do this if you contact customer support number for your device then they should tell you the best way of doing this ok

If I did not charge my palm m515 will it still work? I just got a Palm m515 and I did not charge it for 24 hours before syncing it to the computer. It works fine on the cradle, but it will not keep a...

the m515 uses a Lithium battery .. the modern version of those batteries have a built in safety feature .. once its first activated then it monitors its own voltage .. if the voltage is ever allowed to go below a certain value then it will refuse to accept a charge ... when it tells you that the battery is dead its actually well above that critical voltage .. but if you let it sit for a long time then self discharge can bring it below the critical value .. when the battery is in that forbiden region then there is a chance that it will grow copper links through its insulator .. then when you try to charge it it could get very hot .. even explode .. so thats why the safety feature .. there are ways to jump start the battery and some people do that .. but you can see there is some risk .. the battery in that palm is not hard to change and they are not expensive but you need a very small torques driver to get the case apart .. i just took my 515 to the hardware and had them match it up with the proper tool .. there are kits available also that have a new battery and the proper tools to take the m515 apart .. of course they cost more..

make sure you have the external charger hooked up to the cradle .. it wont charge from the USB port voltage as i recall on this model..

Handspring Platinum with USB cradle

I read and followed several troubleshooting articles from the Palm OS site, including these:
34697
26460
31991
10089
26674
10092
10082
Installed Palm OS 4.0.1
30421
3447
25019
10099
36950
887

However, none of those technical articles helped much, except after going through them, my Palm OS desktop started to work after not opening up at all. Still, my Handspring Platinum would not sync with my PC.

What brought success was following these articles:

2630
1409
28618 (Part 1 of 3)
28623 (Part 2 of 3)

In 28263 (part 2) it said to reinstall certain drivers (steps 5, etc.). As soon as I did that, everything started to work just fine and has been ever since.

Palm M515 hot sync problem

I have a similar problem with my m515. I have 3 palms and 2 sync fine but the 3rd isn't even getting to the computer. There is no recognition from the computer that the palm is trying to sync even though I use the same cradle for all palms. The ensuing message is, "the connection between your handeld computer and the desktop could not be established. Please check your setup and try again". My settings are set Local and Cradle/Cable.

I was having a similar problem with my M515.  I had originally installed the Palm Desktop from my CD, which was an older version.  When I totally uninstalled the old version and installed the newer version from the Palm website I was able to do a successful sync.  I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate and Palm Desktop version 4.1.4

Synch problem after installation

If your cradle is connected to a serial port, you will need to ensure that HotSync Manager is configured to use Serial Ports. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Click the HotSync Manager icon in the Windows system tray. 2. If there is a check mark next to the 'Local Serial' menu item, then you are already configured. 3. If there is not a check mark, click the 'Local Serial' option. For more information, refer to the handbook that came with your handheld. If you did not uninstall your previous version of Palm Desktop, the configuration will be done automatically.
