Trying to get a laptop on aol

Hi
We are trying to connect to Aol by laptop. We have unstalled Trendnet wireless cardbus tew-421pc and Netgear DG834g. The installation goes through ok on trendnet untill you have to click on the computer icon in the system tray. Its always red and not green, and when going into the infrastructure mode its always scanning and there are no drop down boxes and the channels are changing. Also Netgear says No Cable or Router detected. We are using windows xp professional, we have been all through the process of going into internet connections, highlighing the network but still cannot connect. Its an absolute nightmare as we are totally stuck.
Any help appreciated please?

    Hello Jeff

Thanks for your reply. The netgear DG834G is version 4.3 and the the card reads 802.11g wireless Lan pc card, IEEE 802.11g compliant, DSSS at 2.4 ghz ism band, tew-421pc H/W:B1.1R if this helps.

We have our own computer set up using windows xp professional along with aol 9.0vr and the netgear DG834G. We got our daughter this laptop (second hand) and the trendnet card came with it.

The laptop had windows me installed on it so my husband wiped it down and put xp professional on instead. Everything loaded up and it did work great for afew weeks.

Then last week my husband decided to change his password with aol and thats when everything messed up. I contacted aol help team and they guided me through what to do regarding fixing our computer and we managed to sort that out but my daughters laptop just cant get on the internet now.

We wiped everything down again and loaded back xp.

As i said before i keep going through the process that aol have told me of going into internet connections etc: they also said that i had to load in order aol, trendnet then netgear.

They seemed to have installed ok but the netgear gets so far and then says "no cable or router detected", so we are all baffled as to what to do next.

Hope this info if of some help.

    Regards

    Helen

The first problem has nothing to do with your ISP. If you are. Even unplugged from the phone line on the back, the Netgear would still function as an access point, switch, etc. BTW-the Neatgear has an ADSL modem built into it. Are you trying to use an additional modem as well, if so, remove it. Then see if it works.

Connecting to your ISP is the second problem but if the first one is fixed I predict the second one will go away...

Do you have radio signal (wireless signal strength)? This only has to do with the card and router connecting together MECHANICALLY. If not, the Tendnet may be set to a single frequency and should be set to automatic (or at least match the frequency).

Check to see if the SSID (Network Name) are the same on both devices.

Is the Netgear's firewall enabled?

Is the Trendnet enabled?

Have you tried re-installing the drivers?

Are you aware that AOL requires you to use thier software to log-on?

When using DSL there should be a dialer program installed?

There are too many diagnostics so for time and length sake no instructions are give, but if you are not familiar with any the "tests" above I will be happy to guide you through them if you ask one or two at a time. You may reach me at fixya@pcsports.org. One piece of info I would like to know is: which version of the Trendnet are you using (either starts with an A, B or C)? The Netgear will have a V2, V3, or V4 after it. If there is none, it is simple version 1.

Get back to me soon so I can help you through this.

Did forget one thing you need to look at...

The DHCP server on the Negear must be enabled as well as the obtain IP on the Trendnet. This is called Dynamic Addressing-the wireless card asks the Netgear for an IP address.

Does the desk top work ok?

Give3 me a few hour to learn more tek diognostics fore both units then
I will get back with. I only sleep 1/2 hour last night so I'll
probably fall asleep at the computer

In the meantime, plug the laptop directly to the switch. There should
be a RJ-45 on both the laptop and the switch. Use a stright cable, not a x-over model. In fact you should disable
the Trendnet. < Start<Control Panel<Newtwork Connections. Rightclick on the Trendnet Wirelss then left click "disable". Do the same for Local Area Connect except click "enable". If it already says disable, it means it enabled and visa-virsa.

Now see if the laptop will hook up to the internet.

What we are foing her is going through the process of elimination So If this doesn't workleave set as is and get back w/me for further directions,,,

Im sorry but you will never get 54 on your card toughs are theoretical maximum speeds and I have never seen a system actually achieve them the actual speeds received by wireless devices are actually much lower and 11 is a normal speed wile running over wireless. Im sure this isnt what you wanted to here and I am sorry but it pretty much comes down to manufactures lieing by telling you it goes to speeds that can never be reached.

I hope this helped.

Thank you,

Realtek8185 Wireless adapter

Hi Terry,

I believe it was the following...

Realtek Semiconductor Corp - Networking - TRENDnet TEW-421PC/TEW-423PI 802.11g Wireless Cardbus/PCI Adapter
Installation date: ‎2/‎5/‎2008 12:07 PM
Installation status: Successful
Update type: Optional
Realtek Semiconductor Corp Networking software update released in October, 2007
More information:
http://winqual.microsoft.com/support/?driverid=20122747
Help and Support:
http://support.microsoft.com/select/?target=hub

I just checked on Microsofts Windows Update again, and there is another optional update for the Realtek. This only partially fixed my problem - we've also had to adjust the channel our wireless DSL router uses; our cordless phone was interferring with my signal. Now that I've adjusted the channel on the router, I haven't dropped my signal once in more than 3 days. Good luck. Hope this helps.

Browser not connecting

ok, this is more than likely your isp is at fault, i had the same thing and my emails and updates worked but was unable to browse. But first make sure that your pc does not have any corrupt cookies, go to the sie below and download ccleaner, it's free and has no spyware, when you install it go to the left side of the menu, click on cleaner, then click analyse at the bottom. when it has done a sweep click delete files. Try connecting again. Next go to your routers settings and look for what is called DHCP and make sure this is enabled to give your pc an automatic ip address. Then go to your wireless card in control panel>network connections and right click on the wireless cards icon an go to properties. Highlight on the TCP/IP line and click properties, then check that 'Obtain ip address automatically' is ticked. Click ok then try again to get on the net.
