I am assuming that you can hear dial tone on the handset, and you can make calls on the phone. If this is correct, then I would recommend contacting BT and getting the phone replaced with one that works. http://www.bt.com/help/home/landline.html
Have you misplaced your Nortel M7324 Telephone User Card Manual?
Would you like a digital, searchable, pdf version of the Nortel M7324 Telephone User Card Guide? Follow this link (& click FREE) to download a pdf version of the Nortel M7324 Telephone User Card manual.
I cannot find the user guide for this particular phone, but from other BT phones it appears you do not have to do anything !!!! It should automatically show the number IF it is sent by your Telephone Company.
DO NOT forget, that you MUST get your Telephone Service Provider to 'enable' Caller ID on your telephone line.(This normally costs about a Pound a month). or the numbers will not show.
You have unheard messages on the voicemail system provided by your telephone company. This system records messages when someone calls while you're already on the phone. If you're a BT customer then see page 17 of this manual. Otherwise please contact your telephone company for instructions on accessing their voicemail system.
eventually contacted the BT team via telephone and apparently this is a common problem when using BT products with Talktalk & Virgin. To overcome this in the majority of cases, dial 1571 and connect to your voicemail, listen to the options and finally delete all messages. Hope this can be added to your list of solutions.
