I have also disconnected & reconnected all input cables.

  • eeloftus Feb 12, 2008

I ran the white wash feature for 2 hours w/ no success. The line appears with all inputs disconnected as well. Thanks for your reply to my problem.

  • eeloftus Feb 12, 2008

Thanks for your reply to my problem. I have moved the input leads around w/ no success. I did notice the line was still there with all inputs disconnected. The TV is is plugged in to a top of the line surge protector along w/ 3 other components. I will try plugging into a different circuit. I also was informed that crossing power chords over input cables can cause interference.
    The model # is W4200

Thanks for your help. TV is out of warranty & Dells only help was send the TV to San Francisco where they would perform diagnostics and then contact me w/ a repair estimate and for permission to repair the TV.

    Thanks again.

Hiya eeloftus!

The black line in your plasma display is a well-known defect of some panels. Your best bet here is to pass the buck to Dell and make them replace it. You can check your warranty status here

Once you've entered your tag and checked your status there, the site should lead you through the return process. If that doesn't work well for you, call Dell directly at 1-877-671-3355.

Good luck!

Hi.

If this line is completly black chances are one of the ribbon cables that connect to the plasma display is tarnished.
You will need to remove the back of tv set & you will see 6 to 8 2inch wide ribbon cables going to rear of screen carefully unplug them from the PCB do not attempt to pull them from the actual plasma screen. clean them with an erazer & isopropyl alcohol plug them back in & test.

Have you tried to change out the input leads and use high quality ones?
Sometimes interference can do this.
Try moving around the leads to the tv from your various components and antenna inputs.
Also, try disconnecting inputs and use one at a time.
Grounding antennas and input devices properly make a large difference.
Some tv manufacturers recommend not plugging the tv in ;the same outlet circuit as the components attached to it.
If this does not change anything, write back.
Also, is the model number of the tv in your original post accurate or is there a typo?

I helped my wife's parents with a problem they had with lightning strikes. The lightning did not effect the tv, because it was on the other end of their house, but the computer got zapped.
They had the best power strip they could find and lightning got it anyway.
I then changed the receptacle that the computer was plugged into to a GFCI, because it is quicker to trip from a lighning strike than the power strip is(they use both power strip and GFCI).
A power strip is rated in joules and a GFCI is rated in miliamps, and is designed to trip if someone is about to get a shock with moisture situations. A power strip has poor timing because the lighning flash is out of earth and back down to earth when it strikes and actually makes a cycle. The ground rod actually prevents the lightning from from going up and into equipment and when it is on that cycle is when the GFCI trips as opposed to the power strip which sometimes does not trip until the downcycle.
I wish manufacturers would put a GFCI in the power strip with the other electronic components.
I have found that when plugged into a GFCI outlet, that the phone line that is plugged into the power strip is also protected and modems also servive a strike.
As for grounding an antenna, the best way is to ground to a copper or other metal water pipe or drive an 8 foot ground rod into the ground as close to the antenna as you can.
Also, if you have metal water pipes, they should be grounded to the same rod as the electrical panel and as close to the point of entry into the house a practical.
Another error is that the metal service entrance panel needs to be bonded to the same wire that goes to the ground rod.
You are suppose to ground the pipe/mounting bracket of the antenna.
Do not put a grounding rod within six feet of the other rod(s) on your property, as this will make a circuit through the earth from one rod to the other.
If an antenna and the devices hooked to your tv are not grounded, there is a great possbility for static to acumulate and eventually can cause a multitude of problems for tv and components(this hint is in most if not all users manuals for tv's and components).
I have attended electrical refresher courses in order to keep my electrical license and have found that grounding is the number one most important issue and is studied more than anything else.
Large commercial and industrial installations have had major problems with improper or no grounding.
Nicoli Tesla studied direct current and experimented with lightning and how to harness it, and he was a pioneer in direct current systems.
There are many websites about him on the net.

The best way to ground anything is to go to the closest grounding source.
If you live in an apartment, the lanlord may not appreciate someone driving a ground rod on his property.
At the hardware store, you can get an eight foot by 1/2" diameter copper ground rod.
Another way that ham radio operators do it is to burry a wire mesh a few inches under the surface of the ground and about 6 to 12 feet square.
The way to do it inside of a house/apartment would be to run a wire about a number 14 or possible flat braided wire under a carpet or inside some molding or whatever way it will not be seen, over to a known grounded sink water or drain pipe that goes to the pipe where your water meter is or to your water well, if you live in the country. Dish installer grounding information is in most new tv owners manuals etc.
You can go as far as grounding the chassis of all your components(at the back of them on a cover screw) that are at your entertainment center.

Usually black lines in a flat panel indicate an error or problem in the video board. A service professional can hook up to the tv and better diagnose the issue.

hi all .ive had the same problem,a thick black line down screen.sometimes it flickers from top to bottom and other permantly in view.but i have solved it.forget your ic boards and taking apart tv.have you got either a ps3 or wii connected to tv.if so unplug power lead from socket and relocate in seperate socket.make sure the lead is completely free of any other leads and you might just find this works.i think the power lead creates some sort of frequency that the tv picks up .good luck hope it works

the problem can be traced from the power bd. you will need a digital volt meter. There are settings located on a sticker located on the upper right corner Va,Vset,Ve, Vset etc..... each one has a DC voltage. compare the voltages to trace the source. My suggestion from experience is the Y Main upper or lower buffer which ever has a brn mark located on the metal of the panel. Google a local dell dealorship or a repair company in ur local area, and get serviced.

Dell w4201c hdtv plasma tv BLACK SCREEN, LOGO FADES OUT, SOUND REMIANS, HELPPPPPPP

the problem was the y-sus board, i had a local tv repair shop diagnos that much for me. although, he couldn't fix it i did some research and found a company in california, itritek.com, who could. you send him the y-sus board and the two buffer boards and he not only repairs them but he upgrades them. apparently the y-sus board gets too much heat and eventually goes out, sometimes the buffer boards are affected too. itritek.com replaces the components on the y-sus board with better parts which are more heat resistent. i believe this will help you with your problem. let me know...good luck.
