The TV channel should be set on Chanel 3 or Chanel 4.
Use the remote control of the TV to set it.
You can also use the AUX ports (to TV) on the VCR and connect the three wires to the AUX ports on the TV (TV input). The two audio wires are to be connected to Audio in and the Video signal to the Video input.
If you get a garbled picture you can use press the tracking button on the VCR. Usually you press the Channel Up arrow, or Channel Down arrow to adjust the picture.

There are two connection method you can use to connect our VHS to TV. 1. is RF wire and 2. is RCA (Yellow & White/Red).

Using the RF, Check the back of your VHS, you will see "RF Out", connect the RF wire to that part and the other to "RF IN" of the TV. Then search your TV and there should be a display and sound.

Using the RCA, Check the back of the VHS, you will see Video OUT and AUDIO OUT, connect the RCA wire there and the other part to IN of the, then press AV on the TV remote.

Sony DSR-11 fire wire not working

When you say AVI, I'm assuming you mean the standard audio/video.

Unfortunately these decks are prone to eat their firewire chip. There aren't many options besides send it back to Sony and pay $500.
