The problem is almost certainly that the belt for the CD tray is
fatiguing. When this happens it becomes too loose to do its job. The
solution is to replace the belt, of course, but it's not a job for the
faint of heart. Getting at the belt is fairly involved.
There is a temporary fix, though. If you remove the top cover of the CD player (with the machine unplugged) and look at the right rear corner of the CD tray, all the way to the back of the unit, you will see a little spring-loaded
white plastic roller that fits into a notch on the tray. This is to
keep the tray from flopping open and from moving in or out during play.
The belt will be slipping too much to overcome the grip that the roller
has on the tray. You can carefully bend the spring out just enough to allow the belt to do its job but at the same time allowing the roller to still do its job.
This
is a temporary fix. Eventually the belt will reach a point where it
doesn't have enough grip on the pulleys to open the tray at all. It
might even just break and fall off but this fix will allow you to use
the player until you're ready to replace the belt.
Assuming that the laser lens is clean (you don't say how you cleaned it), the three top issues are: weak laser diode (they don't last forever), bad or weak carriage motor (the motor that moves the laser pickup across the disc), or the pickup assembly is simply out of alignment. Unless your player is too old and parts are not available, the laser pickup can be replaced with a new one...but obviously this is a job for a professional.
I spent about two hours fixing mine. The sled mechanism was binding somehow, causing random skipping. The first 10 minutes was getting it apart and figuring what was wrong, the remainder was spent getting all those tiny parts back in the proper place.
Look up the exact symptom before going at it (probably long skips). Set aside a long slow lazy day with nothing to do. DO NOT drink too much coffee, you will be handling tiny parts that go in tedious locations, so you don't need caffeine jitters adding to your misery. Take your time and be careful. It's well worth it. Mine plays like a new one.
You could try a lens cleaning CD. It is a CD with tiny little brushes on the bottom of it.
You listen to a guy say bla...bla...bla...We are now cleaning your player. In 45 seconds it's done.
I bought mine at mendard's for less than $20 part of a 2 piece kit which had a lens cleaning CD and a CD scratch cleaner.
Here's one for sale on amazon
