If you downgraded then make sure you did not use the vista drivers unless they also state that they will work for xp.
You should also check that the hardware is installed correctly.
to do this go to CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE
If you see any exclamation marks in the hardware list then fix those first by getting the correct drivers and installing them one by one doing a restart in between each driver installation
There are four versions of the 5720 and you should ensure you know which one yours is before downloading drivers.

1. You must have a Windows XP CD.
2. If there is a CD Driver that came along with the laptop try and look for the one that says (XP Drivers)
3. If no driver CD included for XP you will have to download from thier site.

If HP has no XP drivers, then youll have to manually search for the drivers. If you have to go hunting, use a program called Everest to identify your hardware.
