Vertical lines in my laptop screen

Hello! I've been using my Compaq Presario (M2223AP) Laptop for 2 years now, then all of a sudden I saw 2 vertical lines on the screen. 1 line is a clear red line (but not so thick & dark) located about 1/3 from the left of the screen while the other is a very faint (thin, almost transparent) line located about 1/5 from the right of the screen. I think it might be a monitor problem. I'm not very good in fixing computers so I have not done anything about it yet. I'd appreciate your help very much. Thanks! I have a Toshiba Satellite and the whole right side of my screen is all vertical, colorful lines. Can this be fixed? Thanks. We have 2 vertical lines on our Toshiba Satellite P105 that is a little over a year old

Both myself and a mate bought Toshiba Satellite P35 s609 17'' laptops and they both started getting vertical coloured lines from a few months past their warranty. Both machines are absolutely covered with hundreds of lines and are now unusable. This seems to be a severe Toshiba problem. I believe the machines are not fit for purpose if they deteriorate so soon from new. These cost over $2000 each!! Toshiba do not want to know or acknowledge that there is a fundamental problem with their screens.

Ii started with 1 green line near the left edge of the lcd display, now I have 7 B/R/G/ all on the left side. Each time I turn on my computer I hate to look at the screen because most likely there will be a new 1, just got another today. No lines at all on external monitor, my 50" Sony LCD TV, which I am using the 7900 GT card thru the DVI output to run HD movies on.

This is ridiculous for a computer that cost as much as this. No more Toshibas. I've had 3 now and all 3 have failed. I am saving my $ now because I know that 1 day I will turn it on and won't be able to see anything.
BACK-UP ALL YOUR STUFF NOW! If your having this problem.

Thought it might be a short? Not that I can find. And now that I'm looking at the boards I am finding out this is a fairly common problem with Toshiba.

There could be three different possibilities why you would get a line on your lcd display.

First, it could be a missing signal from the controller IC to LCD driver IC

Second it could be a defective LCD driver IC itself

Third it could be a dry contact in the tape carrier package ( TCP).

Attach an external monitor to your laptop and make it your primary display unit to see if you are still getting the lines if not its you TCP if you still get lines it will need to have either the LCD IC or the controller IC checked and possibly replaced.

I have the same problem too.

Its like my laptop has had a stroke. Not only do I have the coloured lines issue but I also have a stripe that is about 5inches wide (Everything in it is darker on half the screen).

I thought i'd put this comment here just in case anyone got in touch with Toshiba. copy and paste this entire thread to show them that THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM.

Not that they would care any way- Toshiba don't build things to last any more. My sister has had two Toshibas break just after the warrantys have expired. I have two friends with the same Equium A60 laptop as me and all overheat and turn off.

Come on Toshiba, sort it out. Every customer you get, is a customer that will not be returning and probably put off for life. I know I will never be buying from you again.
Is that the kind of service that you want to be giving?

"At Toshiba quality and reliability is at the heart of everything we do. With technologies being developed in more than 30 separate R&D laboratories and over 300 subsidiary companies around the world Toshiba engineers are dedicated to finding the best product solutions for you, the customer."

Why don't your products last then???????

Instead of rushing to get your products out and spending a fortune on advertising, spend more time and money on PRODUCT TESTING . You'll see that word of mouth, satisfied and possibly even (dare I say it) happy customers will get you a lot more sales and respect than any advertising campaign can do.

Hope to see some improvements soon and I pity anyone that is struggling with their Toshiba.

Best Regards

I have a Toshiba Satellite with so many multicolored lines I can hardly use it, and more appear almost daily. I have heard that the problem is the over heated video card. Normally not a severe problem,.. the video card in Toshiba's are integrated with the motherboard, and to correct the problem, the mother board must be replaced. For my lap top thats about $700 bucks(aprox 1/2 the replacement cost). If I chose to replace the mother board... it would quite possibly fail again. If any one has info to the contrary, please advise,..other wise I'm done with Toshiba's!!!
Thanks , bp tw.pruitt@verizon.net

My Satellite did the same. Seems that Toshiba has a problem with video cards going bad. Trouble is their integrated with the mother board as one unit, so the mother board has to be replaced to correct the line/video card problem. Better to buy another PC due to the high repair cost. bp

Toshiba has a problem with video cards going bad and those lines are the result. It will progress until you cant see the info behind the lines any more. Bad news is that on most if not all Toshiba PC's the video card is integrated with the mother board and the mother board must be replaced to replace the video card. I'd buy a new PC.

I know not everyone has this ability, but if you can, go to a friend's house and hook up an external monitor to your laptop. You may need to use the function keys to switch from LCD to external, but if the lines go away on the external, you have a bad LCD. If the line shows up still on the external, then your problem is either:

a) video driver (free, easy fix)
b) bad inverter (video 'outputter') ...approximately $10-50/varies + labor costs to replace
c) bad video card/motherboard ...usually between $200-$400 + labor to replace

Hope this helps - please be sure to rate my answer :)

Try connecting an external monitor to the Dell Inspiron 9300 and see if the vertical line is also present on the monitor. If the monitor display is fine, then your laptop’s LCD display panel is defective. If the monitor also displays the vertical line, then your problem is with either the video card or motherboard located inside your laptop.
Not sure if the Compaq Presario has an external monitor plug, but if it does the above procedure can be applied to that one as well.

Have you tried hooking it up to an external monitor?
This would ensure that it's the screen and not the video card..
If you do that and you receive a good picture then it could be something as simple as a loose video cable. Or it could also mean something like a bad video card or the expensive one, a bad screen.

if this line is there during boot up then it is a monitor problem usually. but if it is not then it is a problem with your windows files. you could try reinstalling your windows from the disks you were given with it? otherwise i will look into it. email me if you need more help. milliprowd21@yahoo.co.uk

My understanding is that you have 2 laptops with the same problem, if that is the case, you need to replace the lcd. When you have lines on lcd's, that is a sign of a bad lcd.

Vertical lines in my laptop screen

There can be 3 possible reasons for this
1)Screen connector cable is loose. You can try to re-seat it and see if works.
2)display card problem. Connect your laptop to an external monitor and see if the problem persists. If it does not then
3)You will need to get a replacement LCD screen.
Hope this helps!

Hi,
what i recommend you to test is to press behind your monitor and see that the line goes off or not.If it does..that mean you have a loose connection,it can be fix.Incase no then you have problem with your LCD.Normally if its LCD problem then you fix this problem, all you have to do is change the LCD.
goodluck,takecare.
