I HAD BEEN USING THE SUBJECT MACHINE. A FEW DAYS AGO A MSG CAME TO HE LCD SCREEN THAT, "MACHINE ERROR 41; UNPLUG POWER AND CALL TECHNICAL SUPPORT".
I DID ACCORDINGLY. BROTHER SAID THE MACHINE IS OUT OF IT'S MANUFACTURING WARRANTY THEREFORE IT WILL BE CHARGABLE AND TOLD ME AN ENOROMOUS AMOUNT WHICH IS FOUR TIME MORE THAN THE ACTUAL PRICE OF THE MACHINE.
WOULD YOU BE KIND ENOUGH TO LET ME KNOW:
IF I CAN FIX THE MACHINE MYSELF?
OR LET ME KNOW THE CHEAPEST WAY TO FIX IT?
PLS LET ME KNOW THE PLACE AND/OR PERSON?
ALSO LET ME KNOW WHAT MEANS BY "ERROR 41" BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE THE MANUAL WITH ME?

Re: BROTHER "MFC-3820-CN" TROUBLESHOOTING
You need a new print head.
You could try cleaning the one on there, but all brothers similar to yours are plagued by this problem.
To clean it try:
SWITCH MACHINE ON WHILST HOLDING DOWN MENU/SET KEY, THIS PUTS MACHINE INTO FACTORY SETTINGS MODE. (MAINTENANCE WILL SHOW ON LCD) ENTER CODE:84 & WAIT WHILE MACHINE PERFORMS A FORCED CLEANING CYCLE. (cLEANING WILL SHOW ON DISPLAY) NOW ENTER CODE:09 & MACHINE WILL PRINT OUT ITS PRINT QUALITY CHECK SHEET. (IGNORE INSTRUCTIONS PRINTED ON CHECK SHEET) CHECK QUALITY & REPEAT BY USING CODE:84 IF NEEDED. (YOU MAY HAVE TO DO THIS SEVERAL TIMES BUT YOU SHOULD SEE A STEADY IMPROVEMENT WITH EACH CLEANING CYCLE)
WHEN FINISHED AND QUALITY IS GOOD, ENTER CODE:99 TO RETURN TO STANDARD MODE. PRESS MENU/SET 4, THEN MONO FAX START TO PRINT OUT PRINT QUALITY CHECK SHEET & FOLLOW ON SCREEN INSTRUCTIONS.

This is a very well known problem that all the Brother inkjets of that age suffer from. It is believed to be rusting of the inside of the printhead that causes error 41. There is only one fix and that is to replace the printhead . However it is not cost effective and the new head will not last that long either. I used to work for Brother and we were changing heads all day long. It cost Brother a fortune. Scrap the machine and buy a new one.
Very likely your print head is faulty. You can get it replaced or try the economical solution below.
I had the same problem after replacing the print head. I removed the ink cartridge and then unclip the two metal two clips by the side that hold the print head. Then I used WD40 to spray through the ink holes until the clear liquid comes out from the print head. Then I replaced everything back and start the cleanning process, do a few test prints. It works ok now, no more Machine Error 41. Therefore, sometime the problem might just be clogged pin heads!
