Question about Hitachi 51SWX20B 51" Rear Projection Television

Help please I changed the convergence IC's and have the same problem. Please look at the picture I attached to the post. Thanks, Clayton

    Yes on the magic focus and no on the resitors. I have the service manual, what resistors should I check?

    I sent it. I could dee if one of those resisitors were bad/going bad and it's resistance increased it would lower the deflection voltage +/- from zero point in the center of the screen., correct?

Have you done a magic focus since replacing the ic? did you check the 6 resisters?

    i don't have a service manual but they range from 3.9ohms down
    they are off the output of the convergence amp ic's, lift one leg out of the circuit.

How do I tell if the IC’s are damaged?
When looking at the area around the convergence IC’s you see some resistors that have changed colors, or you test a resistor and it no longer reads the marked value. You will have to replace the IC’s and the supporting components.

When you remove the old IC's, please be sure to remove all of the old heat sink compound, as it can act as an insulation for the new IC's and cause them to overheat. I usually clean the heat sinks with alcohol and a small rag.


Where are the IC’s located and how do I find them?
There are two and large IC’s that control the convergence in a big screen set. Some of the newer sets only have one. If you only have one, it is right in the middle of the set on the center circuit board. They are secured to a very large aluminum heat sink. They will have a part number stamped on them that will start with an STKXXX-XXX, like STK392-110.

Along with the convergence IC’s there will also be some associated components that will need to be replaced as well. There are some resistors that are part of the convergence circuit that will be open and need to be replaced. Most likely these will appear charred in the center. If you have an Ohm Meter or a DVM, check all the resistors that are close to the IC’s and you should be looking for either ones that have opened or have changed values.

If one of the convergence IC’s are found to be bad, I would replace them both, if one has gone bad the other may go soon. I usually order my parts from Andrews Electronics in California, they will have the OEM components that you will need.

The rear projection lamps appear to be out of alignment and the Magic focus is not correcting the problem.

My tv has double picture how do i fix it

Picture looks like it is doubled, and has a blue and green tint to it. When green bulb is covered up picture realigns and looks pretty good, does it need a bulb replaced?

Convergance problem on lower half of screen.smeared red and orange double vision,but only on bottom ofscreen.top appears out of focus,but not double visioned.

The TV has a convergence problem; the IC’s for that circuit will need to be replaced. The part(below) Number is from Toshiba, they provide good advice on replacement parts. Make sure what type of IC's your TV uses first. The cost for this repair runs around $450.00 or more.

Replace the defective Convergence Output IC Part Number
23905094 (STK392-110) using the revised “T” version IC Part Number
23135090 (STK392-110T). When Convergence Output failure is
detected, it’s recommended that both IC’s be changed to the “T” type IC
version. Inspect the Convergence Output IC’s for the “T” type version as
shown in Figure 2. Replace the Convergence Output IC’s using the “T”
type version Part Number 23135090 (STK392-110T).

Picture went out of shape


What you might be experiencing based on your symptom sounds like a damaged convergence IC.

With any Projection Television that has a damaged convergence IC, you do not want to continue the use of the set. If the IC’s continue to fail they will cause a short in the power supply and cause your television to not power up, and possibly damage the CRT’s in the set.

With that aside I have some support suggestions that I have put together that may help you make an informed decision.

While it is not a very hard repair, this repair can be a bit tricky. If you have a 45W soldering iron, solder, solder wick, and
heat sink compound you can repair it yourself.

When you remove the old IC's, please be sure to remove all of the old
heat sink compound, as it can act as an insulation for the new IC's and cause them to overheat. I usually clean the heat sinks with alcohol and a small rag.

Colors are off and the picture is concaved. Tried to flash focus with no change. Picture is narrower in the middle and the colors are seperated.


Your symptoms sounds like a damaged convergence IC’s.

There are two and sometimes three very large IC’s that control the convergence in a big screen set. They are secured to a very large aluminum heat sink.

Most of the time you can just correct the convergence through the television menu. All that needs to be done is line up the blue and red to the green. If the colors do not move then there may be faulty components in the convergence circuit.

You may want to consult a Television Repair Technician, or repair this yourself. If you want to tackle this yourself, let me know, I can give you some direction for the repair

WS-55819 Mitsubishi Rear projection TV Picture goes blurry


Convergence ICs are bad need to be replaced. You will need to replace both of them also check the resistors right next to the IC often 1 or 2 of them burn out when the IC goes.

It looks to me like the green is sagging down at the top, and this means that one of your convergence IC's has stopped working. Instead of replacing the whole module, locate the convergence IC (Samsung typically uses the STK392-040 IC's) that handles Green Vertical (GV) and replace it. Sometimes there is a fuse next to the IC that looks like a small resistor that opens up too. If you do not have experience changing convergence than have a qualified tech handle it for you.
