Question about Vacuums

Vacuum cleaner smells

Eureka canister starts to smell as soon as it is turned on.  My panasonic starts to smell after about five minutes.  Both have the same smell kind of like rubber.

I have one of the "original" Oreck vacuum cleaners (hotel type). I have a problem going through belts like crazy......no more than an hour's use and it rips (partially or completely) or stretches to the point of slippage that renders it useless. I have used Oreck brand belts exclusively. The brush roller turns freely and is not dragging and the motor shaft is turning fine. The two seem aligned in a true parallel so no slipping could occur. Should I try to "cap" the motor shaft to prevent slipping, or maybe paint on an abrasive coating on the motor shaft?? Help !!

A rubber smell usually indicates a belt slipping. Rubber belts stretch after a short while and will slip on the brush roll under load. Check also to make sure that the brush roll is turning freely.

Eureka burning smell

Hi, it's Cindy from Crucial Vacuum.

Since you have replaced your Eureka 4870MZ 9200 Proheat 2x vacuum's belt, the issue may either be caused by your roller or the position of your belt. It sounds like as soon as your vacuum is lowered, the belt is either slipping or wear on the end caps is causing your roller to stop. This will cause the burning smell since your motor is now straining against the abrupt stop. Try taking off your roller and checking the conditions of the end cap or try to reinstall your belt. I have included an instructional video: http://youtu.be/rji0fl9hytY

My Model 2961 Eureka wont take power now?

Hi,

Anytime that you smell that electrical burning smell on a vacuum cleaner, this is the motor going bad. There are two distinctive burning smells in fixing vacuum cleaners, the electrical burning smell which is the motor, and a rubber burning smell which is the belt.

The bagless vacuums cleaners in general, their motors last usually no more then 3-5 years. The motor in bagless vacuums work much harder then the motors in their bagged counterparts.

The motors in Eureka vacuums can range in price from $70-$120. If you can provide me with the exact model number on your vacuum cleaner (can be found on the bottom or the back of the machine on the sticker that also contains the serial number) I will be able to get you the part number, and price of the motor that's used in your vacuum.

It may be worth considering to just get a new vacuum cleaner at this point. If you'd like me to give you a personalized recommendation specifically for your unique cleaning needs, I'd be honored to do so. Please just let me know what types of floors you have mostly in the home and I'll be happy to share my knowledge of vacuum cleaners.

I hope this was helpful to you. If you found this helpful, please be sure to rate the repair helpful so other Fixya users that have this same problem can easily find the answer.

Thanks so much,

Chris J.

Eureka canister vacuum cleaner Model 6865

The 6865 has a high rpm AMTEK Lamb motor, Brushes will seldom solve the problem at this stage.
Once the sparking and burning starts the conectiion between the brush and commutator is arcing and burning. If the sparks are blue, save your time.
A good service tech will run in brushes with a seating stone and a low voltage setup to allow new brushes to seat, but this is generally best accomplished on heavy duty , lower rpm motors.
IF YOUR ARMATURE IS SCRATCHY LOOKING OR WORN LIKE AN APPLE CORE,OR THE SEGMENTS ARE NOT PARALLEL IN THE SPACING YOU WILL NEED A NEW MOTOR.

That means that the belt2_bing.gif is starting to wear. When the belt starts to stretch it can't turn the roller brush against the resistance of the carpet and therefore doesn't pick up well. You simply need to change the belt. Here is a link to the belt you need and to the manual:

Our vacuum smells like burning rubber. Does it

Burning rubber smell means the brush belt need attention. Make sure the brush is turning freely and replace the belt

Smell/suction

The brushroll may spin when looking at it but stops when pressure of the floor is applied. The belts stretch, so they look fine but are not. The smell - if it's a rubber smell - would also be the belt. Some, or most, brushrolls can get hair in the ends that could also cause a smell and belt problem.

Burning smell/lost suction

Is the brush roll turning while on the carpet. If the belt is old, then it has stretched and will slip causing a rubber smell. But if it is an electrical smell, then your motor is failing and will need to be replaced.
