Question about Samsung SpinPoint P120S (SP2004C) 200 GB Hard Drive
Can not boot. Diagnostics indicate drive failure. The failing drive is a Sumsung SP2004C 200GB drive that is in a Compaq Presarui SR1936X desktop. When booting in safe mode, it goes as far as loading disk drivers and stops at
My guess is that your hard drive is corrupted. If you have any extra hard drives (external or internal), try replacing your current hard drive with that one, and see if that works. If it does, you may have to take your Hard Drive to a computer shop to have it recovered.
If that doesn't work, then something corrupted your operating system. I would re-install the operating system (reformat may not be necessary, but is always better than just a reinstall, although you do lose all of your information during a reformat), and then try.

I had one of these drives fail, and then the identical replacement drive provided under warranty by HP also failed after about 18 months. This appeared to be a failure to spin up due to bearing or motor issues. When repeatedly failing to boot, a message appeared requesting a valid boot drive. The bios could not see the hard drive at all, as if there were none installed. The drive made a nasty squealing noise for about a half second on each attempt to power up.
When we turned the computer case on it's side and removed the cover to check for loose cables and listen carefully to check the source of the bad noise, the machine booted normally. We were able to copy all personal data to an external drive. We had expected the data to be lost for good.
It is possible that by turning the case on its side the changed bearing orientation allowed the drive to spin again. the drive was mounted in the usual way in a tower case with the disks horizontal. Anyone with a dead hard drive could try rotating the computer 90 degrees as a way to get the drive going long enough to copy and move data.

I was able to get the drive back by using a "3 in 1 Cables Unlimited USB 2.0 to IDE & SATA Cable" ($34.99).
After strapping the drive into this device and plugging it into the usb of other computer, it auto ran the chkdsk utility upon booting, i.e. be sure to power up the laptop with the drive plugged into the usb. This fixed the problem - I transferred the drive back into my Presario and it now boots fine.
I appreciate your help. The one thing I failed to mention was that I had to get at the data on the drive. I couldn't simply reformat.
