Samsung sp2004c drive failure

Can not boot. Diagnostics indicate drive failure. The failing drive is a Sumsung SP2004C 200GB drive that is in a Compaq Presarui SR1936X desktop. When booting in safe mode, it goes as far as loading disk drivers and stops at
multi(0)disk(0)rdiskj(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\Mup.sys

Any advice?
Thanks.

My guess is that your hard drive is corrupted. If you have any extra hard drives (external or internal), try replacing your current hard drive with that one, and see if that works. If it does, you may have to take your Hard Drive to a computer shop to have it recovered.

If that doesn't work, then something corrupted your operating system. I would re-install the operating system (reformat may not be necessary, but is always better than just a reinstall, although you do lose all of your information during a reformat), and then try.

I had one of these drives fail, and then the identical replacement drive provided under warranty by HP also failed after about 18 months. This appeared to be a failure to spin up due to bearing or motor issues. When repeatedly failing to boot, a message appeared requesting a valid boot drive. The bios could not see the hard drive at all, as if there were none installed. The drive made a nasty squealing noise for about a half second on each attempt to power up.

When we turned the computer case on it's side and removed the cover to check for loose cables and listen carefully to check the source of the bad noise, the machine booted normally. We were able to copy all personal data to an external drive. We had expected the data to be lost for good.

It is possible that by turning the case on its side the changed bearing orientation allowed the drive to spin again. the drive was mounted in the usual way in a tower case with the disks horizontal. Anyone with a dead hard drive could try rotating the computer 90 degrees as a way to get the drive going long enough to copy and move data.

I was able to get the drive back by using a "3 in 1 Cables Unlimited USB 2.0 to IDE & SATA Cable" ($34.99).

After strapping the drive into this device and plugging it into the usb of other computer, it auto ran the chkdsk utility upon booting, i.e. be sure to power up the laptop with the drive plugged into the usb. This fixed the problem - I transferred the drive back into my Presario and it now boots fine.

I appreciate your help. The one thing I failed to mention was that I had to get at the data on the drive. I couldn't simply reformat.

Thank you!

-Bill

Sometimes this can be an indication your drive is beginning to fail. I would extract the drive from it's shell to rule out the shell/caddie as the problem. Then run diagnostics on the drive using Seatools:

I have a compaq witha samsung hd M/NSP2504C, S/N S09QJ1ULB30333. What are the speed and buffer specifications and which hard drive would you recommend for a compatable replacement or slave.

Hello
Samsung SP2504C is a 250 GB hard disk drive using the new SATA-300 interface, which allows a maximum theoretical transfer rate of 300 MB/s. Its main specs also include an 8 MB buffer, 7,200 rpm rotation speed and support to NCQ (Native Command Queuing). In this review we checked the performance of Samsung SP2504C installed on a motherboard using a regular SATA-150 port and also on a motherboard using the new SATA-300 port.
This very same hard disk drive is also available with a 200 GB capacity, being called SP2004C. Both belong to SpinPoint P120 series from Samsung.
Good LUCK AND DO RATE THE SOLUTION IF HELPS

HARD DRIVE CLICKS AND WHEN PUT IN A EXTERNAL ENCLOSURE DOES NOT GET RECOGNIZED BY OTHER COMPUTER.

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

You seem to have a boot up error. you can try using the derive as a second HDD on another PC & reformatting. if it fails, sorry to say your HDD is faulty, if you have warranty ask for a replacment

My 7Y250MO hard drive starts clicking and after a few seconds the system locks up only fixed by powering down and restarting.

Try doing the self-test for the hard drive. It could be a sign of hard drive failure. Just boot to BIOS go under diagnostics then select Primary Hard-drive Self Test. In hp notebooks, we use f10 after turning it on to boot into bios. Ask your computer manufacturer how to boot to BIOS. If you're Hard drive passed the test you might want to try re-installing the operating system. It could be a sign of Windows crashing. If you're Hard drive failed. There you go. You have to replace the hard drive. Hope this helps.

My sp2004c will not complete a CHKDSK with Win XP Pro. Is there a software to help me?

Chances are if it will not complete the chkdsk that it has hardware failures. If this is the case then no, software simply can't fix that. Time to replace the drive. If you have data on the drive, you will most likely need the help of a pro getting the files retrieved at this point.

If you need a pro, reply back with your Country, State and City and I will direct you to a nearby facility.

PC boots but the screen is blank

Please have a look at this article. (and this one.)
I'd begin by pressing F8 while it boots and see if you can start last known good configuration or safe mode. If so, you may want to use your system restore to restore to a previous date that worked. And I would recommend following these protocols to scan for malware that may have gotten into the works somehow. Do this before you shut it down again, but run mbam from normal mode if possible.
If that doesn't work, you'll need your recovery disks to run the recovery console, and I'd recommend you run chkdsk c: /r to check your hard drive for corrupt files that are preventing it from booting. See instructions here and here. and here.
Here are some links to other helpful articles that deal with startup problems, and may help you to diagnose the cause.
You might also want to take a look at the Event Viewer and see if there are errors or warnings there that indicate a problem. Instructions to do that here.
Finally, this startup troubleshooter helps explain how to check for unseated ram and other hardware problems that could be contributing to the failure to boot.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!
