Question about Pentax Optio M20 Digital Camera

2 Answers

Camera problem Hi. I have a Pentax Optio M20 Digital Camera. When I hit the on/off button, the camera turns on, the lens zooms out for a second and then back in, then it shows the "Pentax Optio M" load screen, then it shows "Auto Picture" in the center and a green dot in the bottom left with the words "EV Compensation" next to the dot. While it's showing this last screen, it beeps 3 times right before the lens zooms out again then back in just before the camera turns off. I have changed the batteries multiple times. So it's not the batteries. I connected it to the computer and then hit the on/off button. It beeps twice before the red LED light in the front of the camera lights up while the removable disk window pops up on my computer, showing 2 folders ("DCIM", and "FRAME"). I click on these folders and there's nothing in them. I hit the "on/off" button on the camera again and it turns off while the removable disk window on my computer goes away. None of the other buttons on the camera seemed to do anything whether connected to the computer or not, during every phase of it's on status. What can be done to resolve this? Thank you.

I had a similar problem.  Would turn the camera on...the lens goes out...it appears to be on...then the lens disappears...and the camera turns off.  Every time.  I tried the solution of holding the MENU button at the same time as the ON/OFF button when turning the camera on.  The lens goes out...but it constantly juts in and out (which it has been doing the entire time of my writing here).  Hmmm...how to to turn it...OFF...now?

Im having the same problem, It will turn on, show the exact same thing, and then turn off. I tried the solution, but then it just shows the Optio screen, and keeps moving the lens in and out, and it will not quit until the batteries are removed.

    Help?

When I switch the Optio M20 on the lens moves out at it appears to try to focus. The lens then goes back in and the camera switches itself off. Holding the menu button down didn't work. Holding the blue arrow button allowed picture review mode and access to menus. Even after a factory reset problem still recurs. Any ideas?

Actually, I just tried Svenby's solution again, this time holding the two buttons, then allow it to keep going. I did this maybe 5-10 times, but eventually it worked and began functioning normally.

^___^

Optio M20 Stuck on Zoom in and out!

you have a timing problem, the gears for your housing is out of calibration with your focus lens inside of the housing. you must take the camera apart to correct the problem.there is a flywheel type of ajustment in the top of the camera that can be turned to bring the camera back to its reset position. it is bad to keep turning on the camera as this may danage the gear that is out of time.

Found the following on a website about these cameras...
http://www.digitalcamerainfo.com/content/Pentax-Optio-M20-Digital-Camera-Review/Modes.htm
"The second, and previously mentioned automatic mode, is the Green mode that restricts the camera controls to two flash settings, three AF options, zoom, and a self-timer setting. This mode locks out the menu systems, manual focus, mode menus and other options. It’s definitely easy to use, as all one can really do is point and shoot."

This may be a internal software confusion problem. If it is, the following may help.
Make sure your buttons or dials are not on AUTOMATIC, that appears to set the green mode.
I think I would remove the batteries. Next, if the camera has a small battery (similar to the bios battery in computers) remove that as well. Let the camera sit over night. You will need enough time for the capacitors to discharge. Then put the batteries in again, and try.

Maybe.
But it does seem to be a lens problem. Possibly the lens is out of sync as mentioned in another post here.If there is a grinding, the lens is probably damaged by dirt or sand.
Make sure the batteries or battery is fully charged.

Optio M20 Beeping

You certainly need to use high capacity Ni-Mah or lithium batteries. Using alkaline would have caused overheating and may therefore have damaged the board. You are right to ask is a repair worth it? Almost certainly the answer is no even if possible. There are usually no spare parts available. Go back to tech support and this time simply report the bare facts -'It wont stay on'. Say nothing about the battery situation. Depending on the age of the device you may be offered a reasonable swap out price.
