Question about Microsoft Xbox 360 Console
Whenever I put Halo 3 or Call of Duty 4 or anything into the console, it says "Reading" for a while on the Xbox 360 Dashboard, then it just says "Open Tray" and does not start the game. I keep
trying over and over again but whenever I put a disc in it won't start up, and the
disc does not have scratches on it. What should I do?
I had this before a few times, nt sure if it will work 4 u guys. when this happens what i done was that
i got my xbox (no disc inside it)
turned it on horizontal
made the console vertical (whilst still running)
and then back to horizontal again (whilst still running)
then turn it off
turn it on again, stick any game in and it should work. thats what i done when mine got broke. best of luck. if it doesn't work, take it Microsoft.

Hey guys, i got the same problem...but i found a workaround! ( didn't want to use the word "fix" since i still get this problem every once in awhile.)
Same deal, put a game in it spins a couple of times and then shows the "open tray"
What I do when this happens, ( usually happens when i put in a game i've never played before, don't know if that is relevant ) is turn off the console, remove my HDD and boot it back up. As soon as I hear the console "revvin'" like it would sound when loading a game, i turn it off.
Replace the HDD.
Boot system back up...and the game loads fine!
Hope that helps

XBOX sucks. That is the best answer. They don't care about your problems or what kind of **** they sell you. They have your money and you have ****. Best solution, start a revolution and blow microsoft to ****. The whole world is **** and we allow it to be this way.

This is actually a problem they have been having a lot lately I think it is referred to as the e74 error which if you call Microsoft and let them know they will get your Xbox fixed for free because they extended the warranties for this problem.

This is NOT a problem with the disk drive. Here's how I know. I am fixing/selling a friend's Xbox for him. The xbox worked for a while after I fixed the original problem (Red Ring) then this problem began to occur (main menu displays play dvd for games + it will play dvds but not games). Suspecting that it may be the disk drive, I decided to swap out his rom for mine. When I did this I learned two things: 1) My disk drive would not load on his xbox, telling me that obviously it wasn't the drive. (Yes, mine still works on my xbox) 2) Another problem that he was having IS directly linked to the disk drive. This problem is a white screen that appears sometimes that says something along the lines of "the disk is unreadable" in several different languages. This problem occured with his disk drive in my xbox. I think that it may be some sort of software malfunction, but I'm not positive. His xbox is basically big paperweight. One thing that I am 99% certain of is that this is NOT a problem with the disk drive. I really hope this information helps someone.

I'm not sure who said what in this discussion..But I might have one or two answers. [JustJohnny] I am experiancing most of the same problems. My DVD movies work fine everytime. I recently learned that Xbox360 games spin the opposite way of DVD Movies. So this explains why regular Xbox games work everytime, because they're registered as DVD's like DVD Movies. Makes sense. When the 'Put this disc in an Xbox360 console' message comes up, this is because it boots up as a DVD movie, and this is what would show up if you put it in an actual DVD player..Makes a little more sense that way. All I can say is I hope you guys have warranty. Good luck

The laser is dirty or is going out. The laser can be replaced without having to replace the entire DVD but it is a difficult process and requires ordering and installing the hardware. This also breaks Microsofts warranty. Best to take to a technician or call Microsoft if it is still under warranty and they will send yu an entirely different Xbox...not sure why they do that but it is their quick fix.

9 times out of 10 it is laser failure in the dvd drive and usually starts with just backup games (weaker dye) and then moves onto your originals until the laser dies completely.

Banging the console is only a short term solution. I tried it but it didn't work very successfully. The only way I got my x-box to work was to put a disk cleaner into the machine. You may have to open the tray a couple of times for the brushes to go over the laser but it did work very well.

I have the same problem, a good thing to do is find someone with a xbox 360 with the "RING OF DEATH" (which shouldn't be hard to do since they have a 54% failure rate also do not buy it if they ask more than 30 bucks any more is a rip-off) and buy it off them (for cheap I'd hope) and switch the cd drives' it's pretty simple. if you plan on doing this make sure the middle light doesn't flash within the first 2-3 seconds when the "DEAD" xbox is turned on, if it does that could mean there is an error with the disc tray too and you dont want that

Clear the system cache:
1. On the console, go to My Xbox, and then select System Settings.
2. Select Memory.
3. Highlight any storage device, and then press Y on your controller.
4. Select Clear System Cache. If Clear System Cache is not available, use the following controller button sequence to clear the system cache: X, X, left bumper, right bumper, X, X Note If you don't see a system maintenance prompt on the screen, try pressing the button sequence again.
Try playing discs without the hard drive in:
1. Turn off your console.
2. Locate the hard drive on your console.
Press the release button on the hard drive and lift the hard drive from the console.
Turn on your console.
3. Try to play a game disc.
If this resolves the problem, you will need to replace the hard drive. If not, do the same thing for your memory units. If it works without them, they may be bad.
Thank you !!
