Question about Microsoft Xbox 360 Console

17 Answers

Discs won't start up when put in the Xbox 360

Whenever I put Halo 3 or Call of Duty 4 or anything into the console, it says "Reading" for a while on the Xbox 360 Dashboard, then it just says "Open Tray" and does not start the game. I keep
trying over and over again but whenever I put a disc in it won't start up, and the
disc does not have scratches on it. What should I do?

360 will play old xbox games but not 360

  • bntns Feb 12, 2008

Thanks for that ctf1800, but when the stuff they list (which they don't list much) doesn't work ... what are you supposed to do?

  • bntns Feb 12, 2008

weird, I took Halo 2 out and blew on the disc tray and the inside of the machine lightly. I closed the disc tray with no disc in it, opened it and put Halo 2 in... it worked ... but most of the time when I do that it won't ... what is wrong with my console lol

  • bntns Feb 16, 2008

seems like the disc drive isn't spinning the disc fast enough or not at all or something ... looks like more xbox 360 faulty hardware

  • Anonymous Feb 16, 2008

First the red lights and not even 2 months later the cd drive decides to take a nose dive!!!

  • justjohnny86 Mar 25, 2008

When my xbox has been running for a little bit, and has warmed up, so to speak, if it is turned off or the disc is removed, it will exhibit the same behavior that you guys are describing. It doesn't matter what the game is. If my 360 has been running for as little as 10 minutes, you have to commit to whatever you're doing, because it will not read a disc any longer. God forbid it freezes or the "This disc is unreadable" screen. ::Aggravating::

Also, my 360 won't play dvds without skipping and pausing every 5-10 seconds once it seems to have warmed up.

I sometimes also get the "to play this disc, place in an xbox 360 console" when I put a disc in [and it is read] which doesn't make any sense to me what-so-ever.

All these issues have happened since the day my copy of "R6: Vegas" fell into the box (out of the tray) and i had to dig it out of the internals.

Could it be the dvd drive failing? **It's a mystery**

  • Anonymous May 16, 2008

    nothing will work on mine.

  • todope May 19, 2008

I was playing gears of war one day and my xbox fell and my gears got scratch bad. so i would open and close my drive alot so it would work and then i would put in halo3 and it would not work but my halo3 was not scratch. and then none of my games would work and then my muisc disk would not work and every time i put in a disk it starts to read and then it says open trey. so what do i do now.

  • Anonymous Oct 11, 2008

when i turn on my xbox 360 its comes up with the xbox 360 dashboard and starts reading it but then it says open disc tray and doesnt play the disc it does it with any disc i put in there.

  • Anonymous Oct 27, 2008

hey, DVD'S dont seem to be a problem too much, music cd's wont play at all anymore. and now my games (pgr3/cod4/gta4) wont play either. i have tried eleminating dust with a vacuume (in the fan grids) and also moved my xbox so that the fans are allowed more space to cool the 360 down. this is the second problem with two different consoles. im starting to wonder if mr bill gates prefers quantity rather than quality. my next console will not be microsoft. iv lost all faith, which is sad coz i do love the xbox console. last thing i will try is putting the xbox on the side and playing the disc, cant see how this would make any difference, but worth a try. good luck peeps, how long will microsoft keep spending millions on repairs and replacements. bill gates may be a complete computer geek, but his business mind needs a full system restore!! (oooooh just like his pc windows pakages) give it up bill.

  • blood_summer Mar 23, 2009

Microsoft is really letting all of us down, i love my 360 but all the problems I'm having with my consul just seems like a waste of time and money, 1 week ago a bought rock band two and all the fixings. 189.00$ then a couple days ago i bought Resident Evil 5 = 60.00$ i was playing rockband for a couple days, and i started having this problem soon as i put it in, it got worse over the next week, ive tried everything from cleaning the dust out of it and nothing works, called Microsoft and they want 119.00$ to fix it, i dont think spending 380.00$ alltogether just to play 2 games is worth it at all, Microsoft should be Burned to the ground. i guess theres nothing we can do about it though...

I had this before a few times, nt sure if it will work 4 u guys. when this happens what i done was that

i got my xbox (no disc inside it)

turned it on horizontal

made the console vertical (whilst still running)

and then back to horizontal again (whilst still running)

then turn it off

turn it on again, stick any game in and it should work. thats what i done when mine got broke. best of luck. if it doesn't work, take it Microsoft.

  • homeflash Feb 08, 2011

it worked for me too, I think it is because the way laser is not positioning right, going off trick within the unit. by moving up and down may somehow adjust the laser and that is like warming up the xbox to have a good laser positioning

Hey guys, i got the same problem...but i found a workaround! ( didn't want to use the word "fix" since i still get this problem every once in awhile.)
Same deal, put a game in it spins a couple of times and then shows the "open tray"
What I do when this happens, ( usually happens when i put in a game i've never played before, don't know if that is relevant ) is turn off the console, remove my HDD and boot it back up. As soon as I hear the console "revvin'" like it would sound when loading a game, i turn it off.
Replace the HDD.
Boot system back up...and the game loads fine!

Hope that helps

This is actually a problem they have been having a lot lately I think it is referred to as the e74 error which if you call Microsoft and let them know they will get your Xbox fixed for free because they extended the warranties for this problem.

This is NOT a problem with the disk drive. Here's how I know. I am fixing/selling a friend's Xbox for him. The xbox worked for a while after I fixed the original problem (Red Ring) then this problem began to occur (main menu displays play dvd for games + it will play dvds but not games). Suspecting that it may be the disk drive, I decided to swap out his rom for mine. When I did this I learned two things: 1) My disk drive would not load on his xbox, telling me that obviously it wasn't the drive. (Yes, mine still works on my xbox) 2) Another problem that he was having IS directly linked to the disk drive. This problem is a white screen that appears sometimes that says something along the lines of "the disk is unreadable" in several different languages. This problem occured with his disk drive in my xbox. I think that it may be some sort of software malfunction, but I'm not positive. His xbox is basically big paperweight. One thing that I am 99% certain of is that this is NOT a problem with the disk drive. I really hope this information helps someone.

I'm not sure who said what in this discussion..But I might have one or two answers. [JustJohnny] I am experiancing most of the same problems. My DVD movies work fine everytime. I recently learned that Xbox360 games spin the opposite way of DVD Movies. So this explains why regular Xbox games work everytime, because they're registered as DVD's like DVD Movies. Makes sense. When the 'Put this disc in an Xbox360 console' message comes up, this is because it boots up as a DVD movie, and this is what would show up if you put it in an actual DVD player..Makes a little more sense that way. All I can say is I hope you guys have warranty. Good luck

The laser is dirty or is going out. The laser can be replaced without having to replace the entire DVD but it is a difficult process and requires ordering and installing the hardware. This also breaks Microsofts warranty. Best to take to a technician or call Microsoft if it is still under warranty and they will send yu an entirely different Xbox...not sure why they do that but it is their quick fix.

9 times out of 10 it is laser failure in the dvd drive and usually starts with just backup games (weaker dye) and then moves onto your originals until the laser dies completely.

Banging the console is only a short term solution. I tried it but it didn't work very successfully. The only way I got my x-box to work was to put a disk cleaner into the machine. You may have to open the tray a couple of times for the brushes to go over the laser but it did work very well.

I have the same problem, a good thing to do is find someone with a xbox 360 with the "RING OF DEATH" (which shouldn't be hard to do since they have a 54% failure rate also do not buy it if they ask more than 30 bucks any more is a rip-off) and buy it off them (for cheap I'd hope) and switch the cd drives' it's pretty simple. if you plan on doing this make sure the middle light doesn't flash within the first 2-3 seconds when the "DEAD" xbox is turned on, if it does that could mean there is an error with the disc tray too and you dont want that

Next to cleaning your CD good, try also getting the laser eye cleaned as well, this might help. Also, if the disk is too scratched up then it will not read it, the scratches might be too deep.
