I got mine open in under 30 minutes. It's really pretty easy. I don't know how far you got, but there's only a few tricks here. Take the hard drive, CD drive, and battery out, first. There are four screws hidden by the battery. Then also, you have to unscrew and remove the heatsink/fan assembly before you can get the mobo out, so you have to remove the large panel on the bottom. Finally, once you remove the heatsink/fan and all the screws holding the mobo to the bottom of the case, it may still feel stuck. You have to wiggle the audiojack ports out first, then lift it out minding the wirewire port.

Why won't my gateway MD78 power on?

Here below are possible causes and troubleshooting steps of laptop that can't power on, hope it may help:
Possible causes:

1. AC adapter failure.
2. Power jack failure.
3. Motherboard failure.

Possible troubleshooting steps and repair solutions:
1. Test the AC adapter with a digital multimeter. It's possible that you have a failed AC adapter. If you don't have a multimeter, test your laptop with another known good AC adapter.

2.It's possible that power jack (socket where you plug the AC adapter) is broken. Remove the motherboard and take a closer look at the power jack. In some cases you can fix the jack by resoldering it on the motherboard. In other cases you have to replace the jack with a new one. Using a multimeter, test if the power goes to the motherboard through the jack.

3. If replacing the AC power adapter and jack on the motherboard doesn't help, most likely you have a bad motherboard. Replace the motherboard.

Power adapter is good, but Gatway MX6025 will not power on. It does power on briefly with battery installed. I've tested the ac adapter with a multimeter and it appears to be good. Green light on,...

Try to check with another adapter if possible.
The connector of the laptop might be damaged. so the battery is not charging and also not staring laptop on AC power. Check the ac connector of laptop.

Laptop won't power on with ac adapter or battery

Could be a combination of things.

1) Battery is low. Not enough power to turn the laptop on.
Caused by;

2) AC adapter has a plug on the end of the cable. The plug plugs into a DC Power Jack on the laptop.

The DC Power Jack is bad.

2a) The DC Power Jack has a bad connection to the motherboard, (Cracked solder joints), and/or the jack itself is bad.

2b) Center Pin is loose in the jack's mount.
The back of the Center Pin where it mounts has become loose.

2c) The plastic body of the jack, which composes the jack's case, is cracked. This allows movement of the Center Pin.

2b, and 2c cause a bad connection with the AC adapter plug.

No charge to the Battery, no power to the laptop.

[ If this is the case the DC Power Jack needs to be resoldered to the motherboard. The cracked solder joints need to be re-melted, (Reflowed)
Entire laptop needs to be disassembled down to the bare motherboard in your hand.
(No Processor, Ram Memory, or any adapter cards mounted to the motherboard. Nada)

OR,
The DC Power jack needs to be replaced.
This entails disassembling the entire laptop, down to just the motherboard in your hand. (Same as above)

The old DC Power Jack is de-soldered, and a new one soldered in place.

Very FEW computer repair shops have the necessary skill level.
They just want to replace the entire motherboard.
IF one is available.
More Ka-Ching for them also. ]

3) The AC adapter is bad.
Not providing power to the laptop, to charge the Battery, nor give power to the laptop without the Battery.

AC adapter cord from adapter to plug, which plugs into the laptop, (DC Power Jack), may have a break in it.

May be an intermittent contact provided by wiggling the cord.
If this is the case the wires have stretched, and broken.
Wiggling causes the wires to briefly touch, and make contact.

Where this cord meets the plug itself. A lot of times there is a break in the wires in this area.

Solution is to replace the AC adapter. There are universal AC adapters you can buy, or perhaps Gateway still has some for sale.

My gateway mx6025 is displaying no battery is detected and it can only charge when it off, I thought it was the battery, but since i charge it for over two days, it display 100% charge on the battery...

First, you need to make sure your power adapter is providing enough power to both run the laptop & charge the battery. A very good way to do this is to compare your laptop voltage & ampere requirements (written on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop) with the voltage & ampere ratings of the power adapter. Voltages should be the same, or the power adapter's voltage about up to 0.5 volts more than the laptop's voltage rating. Amperage of the power adapter should be at least equal to or greater than the laptop's rating. It should never be less than the laptop's rating, or else the power adapter will be providing insufficient amperes to charge the battery. Of course, the power adapter's nominal amperage might be ok, but it degraded on usage. You can verify this by testing using a good or new power adapter.
If the battery did not charge using the new power adapter, take the battery off the laptop, & using a dry tooth brush, scrub in between the fins of the battery connector on the motherboard & on the battery it self, then put the battery back into the laptop & try again.
If this still did not resolve the problem, then the battery itself could be bad. Try it on another laptop, or try a good or new battery in your laptop.
If this did not work, there might be a possibility that the charging circuitry on the laptop's motherboard is defective & needs servicing. In order to do this, the laptop needs to be disassembled & the motherboard checked for defective/burned out components in the area near the DC jack. Any defective/burned out components found should be replaced, or you might need to replace the laptop's motherboard altogether

You can download a .pdf service manual from here: http://www.eserviceinfo.com/fulltext.php?search_ft=400sd4 It is a multi-part download so make sure you get all four parts to the manual before you try to open it. (if you need WinRAR to unzip the files you can get a demo at download.com) The service manual has instructions and photos on how to disassemble your laptop. Good Luck, El Duderino
