Question about Canon Pixma MP500 All-In-One InkJet Printer

Canon Pixma MP500 Multifunction printer copier scanner error code 5C00

This is actually a possible fix for error code 5C00 "purge cam sensor" where the purge unit has been replaced but still shows the same error code.
I found this by error but it might apply to other Canon printers.
I bought the printer off a well known auction site for a couple of pounds described as "not working does not power up when switched on" I soon found a wire unattached on the power adaptor plug and after soldering got error 5C00. I stripped the unit down and removed the purge unit to find it unused with no ink on the pads that touch the print head, it looked new. I checked the microswitches and sensors were switching/sensing reassembled the unit to have the same error, the purge unit was being driven by the motor correctly, the scraper bit was moving but the unit said it wasn't sensing. I started checking the wiring and that all plugs were in the correct sockets. they were all different except for two, the plug from the purge unit with 4 yellow wires, and a plug with same fitting but with 4 multicoloured wires. the plug from the purge unit at this time was just to the right of middle of the main board and the plug with the multicoloured wires was on the extreme right
somewhere around half way up. I swapped them over the plug from the purge unit and 4 yellow wires were now halfway up on the extreme right of the mainboard, hey presto it worked and the printhead now moved so I assume the multicoloured wired plug feeds the print carriage. The printer functions perfectly.
The person who stripped it to replace the original purge unit must have got the wires crossed.
Hope this helps a few printers out.

My printer has come up with a service error 5c00. What can i do to fix it?

The 5C00 code is for purge cam sensor error meaning an error occurred in the purge unit. You can remove the purge assembly and clean out all the ink covering the moving parts. You can clean it with isopropyl alcohol or just water. If no luck, replace the purge unit, will be around $30.

Service error 5C00? what's that?

Service error 5C00 is a purge unit error. The purge unit like a spitoon to the printhead where is stops. There is a sensor in the purge unit; when it is blocked (usually by ink build up), that error is given. The error indicates that the purge unit may be full or at least gunked up. It may be possible to clean the purge unit and sensor to make the error go away. I base this on information learned with experience on another Canon product (Model i560). Hope this helps...
