I have a 5.1 MEGA HD1 Xacti which was purchased almost 2 years ago. The display is black is black except for the camera settings and I could not take a photo or capture any video. What could be wrong and how long will it take to fix? I need the camera for a school project due in 2 months and don't have time to wait for a mail-in repair.

Re: Display doesn't work
I too had the same problem.I tried tapping around the lens area with a hard object (tip of a screwdriver)
and it worked! It may be well worth you tapping the case in this way
(without pulling the camcorder to bits) on the top, about an inch back
from the front of the lens a couple of times.
I think this is the only home remedy you cab try,if this doesn't work you have to get it repaired..

Sanyo will replace it for $50 if you mail it to them. Just contact them for the address and slip. This is common. The parts are hard to find. Your best bet would be ebay COPY AND PASTE THIS LINK IN YOUR ADDRESS BAR;
My Sanyo Xacti VPC 60 has problem in battery. After taking 2 -4 pics the camera is OFF.
Right from the day of purchase we are facing this problem since last 1 Year.
3 Years warranty is of no use & Sanyo service is horrible i.e still for the last one month its lying with them with no solution.

You can try Nero 8 (www.nero.com) which has a cool player (Nero Showtime) and a user friendly transcoding/DVD authoring tool (Nero Vision) to offer. You may also consider Videolan VLC (www.videolan.org) which is free, open source, less user-friendly but it supports batch file conversion -- a realloy cool features when you have a dozen+ video files to convert.
I have intermittent problems of this type too. Occasionally I get a blank screen in the display mode.
Does the red light on the back of your camera flash while the screen is dark? Mine does.
It is beginning to bug me a lot. It may be because I got my camera wet in the past (and hence I have broken my camera), but I doubt that would result in a partial failure.
I think that the Xacti HD1/HD2 has issues a bit like a blue screen of death on an old Windows computer when faced with storage problems.
I.e. it works but crashes sometimes when it cannot store to its storage medium.
These things work for me
1) Turning the power on and off via the button underneath the screen.
2) Removing and re-inserting the SD card. 3) Turning the power on and off by removing the battery.
4) Using a different (and faster?) SD card. I am still using my HD2, but I am finding that I must attempt solutions 1-3 about once a day.
It could be because the card I have been using recently is not fast enough. The HD2 accepts both SD and SDHC cards. My SDHC card (which is newer) seems to result in fewer problems, either because the SDHC format is more suited to the Xacti HD2 or becaues the SDHC card I have is faster that then SD card I have. I suspect problems with the speed of the card. I am using cheap SD cards.
