Does the agitator shaft turn real easy or does it stop or keep from turning 360. It should have limits and not free wheel or turn around and around. Does it spin correctly? Most generally the parts you are looking for would be accessed from beneath the unit. Not sure about what dog ears are but there are plastic pieces that make the unit shift from agitate to spin on some models. If it has slight resistance to turning the agitator shaft but will turn 360 the gear in the transmission is probably stripped out. Do a little looking from the bottom and turn the shaft while looking at the bottom to see if you can tell what is out. You might find broken parts on the floor under the machine...

I am going to make a guess and say that the transmission has probably shot craps...

Does the tub turn while in agitate mode, or can you turn it while agitating? There are on some units a large solinoid that shifts position when voltage is applied. Some are for setting the drum brake during agitation and releases for spin. If it is not working correctly it could be giving you a problem not totally engaging or dis-engaging. Uf U could send a picture of the underside I might be able to see how it should work...

My washer makes a loud grinding noise when spin cycle is running. If I hold the agitator stationary while spin cycle is running drum will continue to spin and noise stops. I have already replaced the dog...

If dogs and coupling are replaced, then you will need to look at the transmisson, check the piece that holds drum on itself, this bearing can go bad. There is also a seal under the nut that holds on the air bell housing.
There is also a plastic hub that connects the agitator to the motor that can go worn.

Need to replace dog ears on my kenmore 70 series washer, need to know does this only take a socket wrench to fix?

the agitator dogs are found under the top half of the agitator. take out the agiator and you will see 4 cream colored pieces of nylon, these are the dogs and they wear down and the agitator will not move. you do not need any kind of tool to change them.

Kenmore Series 80 Washer, Model 20852 - Agitator not turning well, making noise

Hi, If the washer spins properly but the agitator does not work, it could be the dog kit needs replaced. If the washer does not agitate or spin, it is probably the coupler.
Put the washer in wash cycle with no laundry in it and see if the lower prt of the agitator moves. If the agitator moves, try and hold the upper half of the agitator and see if it will only move one direction. The agitaor dog kit is designed to only let the top part of the agiator to grab one way. When they go bad, they can make some noise.
To replace the dog kit in the agitator, remove the top cap/rinse dispenser and the inner bolt cover. Remove the 7/16” bolt and lift the agitator out of the washer. Separate the 2 halfs of the agitator and replace the dog kit inside the upper part of the agitator.
Please let me know if this helps you or if I can assist you further.

Thanks
Vic

Washing machine won't agitate. It spins but does not agitate in the wash cycle. The agitator turns freely when manually turned. How can I repair this?

you will need agitator dogs if it is a whirlpool product you will need to open up the top cap on agitator there will be a 7/16 nut remove it and then pull from under bottom of agitator carfull it may pull off hard .After that the agiator splits in 2 in the middle there willbe 3 dogs in there seeded around the part insert new parts line up the 2 parts put back on and away you go .That is of course it is a whirlpoll product.

Kenmore washer machine series 80

If it will not spin either, you most likely have a broken drive coupler. This machine is "direct drive" and has no belt. As techs, we see this several times during our work week. Otherwise, if you have the "two piece" agitator, you may simply need new "dogs" in the agitator. if the machine spins fine, fill it only on the smallest load size with no clothes in it. When the agitate cycle starts, take note if the bottom section of the agitator is going back and forth. If it is, and the upper part does not "ratchet" then you just need to rebuild the agitator and that is an easy job.

HI colleen. thanks for the question. i know that you have been doing laundry for 30 yrs. i have been repairing for 45 years. they did not have daugs then. so the problem was not there. yes overloading is the cause . but if it wont go into the spin cycle . that could be the lid switch.

NO,your transmission is probably ok!! Inside your top end of agitator are these 4 plastic parts called "dogs" they need to be replaced. To be 100% sure ,do this first,Fill upthe machine on small load and while its washing look to see if the bottom end of agitator is moving back and forth ,if it is replace the dogs.In some machines you have to change the upper part of agitator. If the agitator is not turning at the bottom than, remove the top of agitator cover so you can get a extended half inch socket in to it and pull the agitator up and check the transmission splines. If they are smooth and cannot grab the agitator than your trans, is bad.
