Wireless email problem

My older presario 2100 was sending and receiving emails with my new Linksys wrt54g router without problems for the past month, yesterday it stopped sending but will still receive. (Outlook 2000)

I have been on the phone all morning and am going crazy, the customer support at Linksys told me it's a port problem and to contact HP to find out my port number, after an hour on the phone to HP they tell me my notebook is out of warranty and they can't help. I told them I was no longer under warranty in my first sentence and all I needed to know was a port number for my wireless very frustrating.

If anyone can help me with this I would be very greatful. Thanks Jim

Hi Jim,

Normally it is port 25 but other ISPs and/or mail servers have been known to change this to some other ports to block spam and bulk emails.

In any case, this is really out of the ordinary:
1. If it were an ISP thing, they would have advised you;
2. the same goes for your mail server.

Another thing you could probably consider is your anti virus is preventing you in sending out emails due to the possibility of a virus in your email software. This is normally done to avoid infecting other computers. It is likely that the virus (if it is a virus) is intended to automatically send email (with infecting attachments) to those inside your address book. Perhaps you can run a full scan and/or use one of those online virus scanners.

Hope this be of help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

    Hi again Jim,

    It would seem that an unwanted software (probably the virus) is causing Norton to stop.
    Try if you can:
    1. simultaneously press Ctrl-Alt-Del, go to Start/Run, type "msconfig" less the quotes and/or see if you can open your Folder Options, if neither , there is a strong possibility of the existence of a virus;
    2. use an online virus scanner and see if it will run;
    3. get hold/download another anti-virus (such as Avira), install and update thereafter run a full scan.

    Fingers crossed for you.

Cannot forward an email received by me to a friend with a Hotmail email address continually rejected

Rather than forward the email, cut the contents and paste it into a new email.
Hotmail might be rejecting it because what you are forwarding may contain a virus. Don't forward any attachments with out scanning them for viruses, plus make sure you are sending to an exisitng hotmail account. You may have typo-ed the email address.
Where did this email originate, is it something that has a bazzillion previous forwarding addresses? Good chance it is infected.

Cannot connect to wireless internet after SP3 update

Hi there.
Firstly reset the wireless router and the modem by unplugging the power supply from the back of them for 30-60 seconds (do not terminate power at the wall because there is still a trickle charge in the wires), then plug them back in and wait for 2 minutes for them to reset themselves and try to reconnect.
Please post back with the results and for additional advice if needed.

Good luck and thanks for choosing FixYa!!

No outgoing email

It appears that you are accessing your charter account thru a different Internet Service Provider. Generally, most ISPs will allow downloads of email from 3rd party ISPs but will not permit uploads (sending email) as this is how many spammers origially sent emails without being traced and would overload email servers.

You best option is to send you email from florida using the charter webmail application at (Click the Email button and sing in to your account) From webmail (Which accesses Charter's Email server) you can send and receive from anywhere.

Home network set up

Possibly the best solution for moving the emails is not as much about a home network as it is about the method you use. I definitely enjoy having a home network because it allows me to share music and files between my computers and it allows me to give internet access to friends when they come over.

That being said, it sounds like you are using Outlook Express for your email and are going to be moving it to Vista's "Windows Mail", which is a repackaging of the same program.

To do this, you will have to export your email in a format that the Windows Mail in your new laptop can read. Luckily you aren't the first person to do this. Try this instructional page. The trick is that where this walkthrough assumes you will be moving the data in a thumb drive or other transportable device, if you had a home network set up you could save it directly to the shared directory of your new computer. That's the only difference.

After you have followed the instructions, make sure all of your email has imported properly and then delete it from the Windows XP laptop. Also, remember to delete from your thumb drive or other device the file you used to transfer the email over to the new computer.

If you don't already have wireless set up, it is probably the easiest and most friendly way to have a home network. Microsoft has a good starter introduction to it. But the basics are pretty basic. If you have DSL or Cable internet already and your "router" or modem doesn't already have a wireless router built in (no antennae), then you'll need a wireless router. Even if you don't have any DSL/Cable service you'll want a wireless router. Check out Netgear, 3Com, and Linksys for these.

You don't use a modem to connect with a wireless router. Connect an ethernet cable between the laptop and the router to ensure that both are working. If this gives you an internet connection then the commonest problem is an incorrect wireless key. Reset the key on the router then cut and paste it into the wireless network setup in the Control Panel. Wireless drivers are frequently updated and you should check for a newer driver.
