INCIDENTALY IT WILL NOT TURN OFF & RESTART I HAVE TO SWITCH IT OFF ON THE SWITCH. IT WILL THEN BE OK FOR A FEW DAYS/WK.

Can be the t con board or the lcd panel. its only possible to finalise by replacing the t con board. Before going for a new t con board try to check the connections from t con to lcd panel. if its possible remove and reconnect it. sometime bad contact can cause such problems. What specific model of JVC multi-system TV do you have? What is the signal source?
The majority of the JVC multi-system TVs that I've researched only have analog tuners (NTSC, PAL). The AV-29LX is an example of the older JVC TVs. Since most over-the-air signals are digital, you will need a digital-to-analog OTA signal converter to watch any signal from an aerial TV. If you have a cable system that has upgraded to digital cable, you will need a cable box.
source mode,(button on tv usually next to menu) tv menu ( usually first page at top of screen), . or tv/dtv on remote ( some times just say DVT on it but you press it twice to go analog ) it all depends on your tv, also depends if the system on the tv has been updated some tv's when the change over happens, remove analog settings so there is no analog on the tv just digital. you can buy an analog box that will fit to the av socket or just connect a old video to the scart socket and get analog that way.
Thank you for using Fixya. I am glad you have performed most of the testing for me :) Anyways the problem is definitely related to the T-Con also known as LCD controller or Timing CONtrol board. Replacing the same should resolve the problem. If you can get me the part number off the board, I can find you a replacement.
Hi it sounds like you have multiple problems with your tv. First you said that there were no digital channels. The tv has a bad signal board. The second problem is the colored line running across the screen. That could be two things either the screen itself is bad or your t-con board is bad. The t-con board would be the cheapest of the two to try. You can get parts from www.interliquidparts.com

This problem is most likely caused by the T-CON board. It could be a bad connection of the cable from the LCD to the T-CON board. or the T-CON board could be bad. Sometimes you can disconnect and reconnect the flat cable(s) to the T-CON board and solve the problem. Else you can replace the T-CON board.
The T-CON board is the board that drives the picture to the LCD screen.
I have a Marantz 7.1 AV receiver (sr5500) and I run a 5.1 set up for home theatre and use the 2 extra channels to run a pair of outdoor stereo speakers... When I first set it up I also found I could not get a digital signal output, only analog, after reading the manual(!) I discovered that it can only output an analog signal...so I have used the phono outputs on my blu-ray player into the CD input of the AV amp and play CDs outside through this and it also outputs the optical digital signal into the AV amp through the DVD input...my iPod also plays through a dock and it's analog output to the speakers outside through another (CD-R) anolog input on the amp...
