Laptop not recognizing USB connection from HC20

I just installed Picture Package for my DCR HC20 and whenever I connect the USB for the camera and press Burn VCD, it quickly reads : "Error" on my LCD screen. All I want to do is transfer and edit recorded images from my camcorder to my VAIO laptop. But I can't seem to find a way. Please help.

Thanks so much. Since then, I have figured out how to transfer video from my camera to my laptop using Movie Maker. But I HAVE noticed the quality is very poor using the USB. So thank you....I am gonna go ahead and get the firewire like you said.

I'm not sure why the camcorder is giving you an error message... but you should know that this "Burn VCD" thing is a pretty nasty hack from Sony.

This will only work in conjunction with the Sony "Picture Package" software.. you have to have that running and properly set up for the video transfer via USB to work. And if it does work, the quality will be horrible -- 1/4 the resolution of you DV images, and arguably worst than VHS tape.

For a real video transfer from any mini-DV camcorder, you need a Firewire connection (Sony calls this i.Link), and a video
capture utility (Windows Movie Maker will work, that's included with most versions of Windows these days). A good video package will allow you to convert the DV footage into DVD, which maintains the quality of the DV camcorder's native format.

Unfortunately, the original software is not available for download. However, you can use i.LINK interface and use the Windows Movie Maker available in the Windows to transfer videos from the Camcorder.

I need picture package software

Forget those software.

Even windows movie maker can do as good job (if not better than) those pic.package thing. But you need to use Firewire cable&card to do the job.Firewire connection is also far superior than USB cable connection, too.

-Stable,trouble free data transfer during video capture.
-Video transferred at its maximum resolution 720*576 pixels or something like that compared to 340*240 via USB transfer.
-100% supported by any video editing program, even the simplest Window Movie Maker. In other words, forget Sony's software - use something else that wouldn't run you.

Of course, those Firewire cable&card might be not very globally available like USB device. But still easy to find and relatively cheap to buy anyway.

Computer not recognizing camera

This was so easy to solve it was almost embarrassing that I didn't get it. If you have the Picture Package Software (Possible to download SPVD-012v) When the camera is plugged into computer through the USB cable and turned on Play/edit mode you will notice a small button that says "FN" this is a function button. Click on Menu and scroll down to the printer looking icon. Press "EXEC" and then highlihgt "USB STREAM" and turn it on. Then boom! You are done. Stupid sony!
