Question about Sony KP-57WS500 57" Rear Projection Television
I recently came into possetion of this set. My fathers neighbor offered it to him for free, as it was broken. Unwilling to fix it, he gave it to me. The person he got the tv from was quoted $300 to fix it, I would rather fix it myself if its somthing I can do. So I get the tv home, plug it in, and surpisingly I do see a picture, however there was about a 2" black bar at the bottom of the picture, and it looked as if there was a blue transparency laid ontop of it. As I mess around with it, the blue "transparency" gets more and more solid. Eventually it turned to a completly blue screen, with white arched lines running horizontaly. It also developed some sort of static look to it. Oddly enough, my menus still look fairly normal...I dont know what that means. I have heard 3 different opinions, The VR focus block, the blue CRT, and 2 IC flatpacks...Thank you for any help you can offer.
Yes, you do have a bad blue CRT (picture tube). The best way to deal with this particular TV is to find a used CRT. Almost every TV shop has one of these sitting around, because the estimate to repair is so high. I have one with a bad red CRT sitting around now for 6 months. You use the blue CRT out of my set if you want for a small shipping and handling charge or find one near you.
Another option is to get it rebuilt at Video Display Corporation.
P.S. Thank you in advance for rating me!

You have a bad Blue picture tube. with Sony, they suggest you replace all 3 tubes at the same time. If you have warranty coverage good, if not forget about it. Get yourself another TV.
