Go to Start, Control Panel, Power Settings, and look in there to see if you have a power setting that puts your hard drive into a semi-active state or sleep after so many minutes of non-use.

Unable to read external HDD after plugging it to a Mac (previously it is readable via a Windows PC)

Chances are it was formatted as NTFS format by the PC which is not MAC compatible. You will need to reformat the drive in HFS format if you want it to work as a MAC disk only or in FAT32 format if you want to read it in PC and MAC machines.

My 320gb western digital wont defrag as it says i have correupt files, it also wont let me copy to it as it keeps coming up with loads of error messages! Help! I cant even scan it!

Hi motleyshue ,
What you can do is copying all the files to an other HD or drive after having recovered the data with a specific recovery software :

http://download.cnet.com/Recuva/3000-2242_4-10753287.html
or :

http://www.tenorshare.com/data-recoveryr.html

Your WD drive is probably defective and good for the recycing bin after these operations . Do not overwrite your existing data on it !

Best regards ,

Your WD HDD have been attacted by viruses for your computer or outside computer where you used it last. Make sure that you have an up to date antivirus software, scan your computer or the external hard drive, explore your computer, go to tools - folder options under view files & folders select show hidden files and folders apply and ok it.

Download a program called Hijackthis from Download.com

Once you run it, click on the button that says "Open the Misc Tools Section" and then choose "Delete file on reboot"

Select the file from your external HD, and click okay. It will ask you to restart your computer, so be sure that you have everything closed down and ready to restart.

Please Rate. Thanks :-)

I would advise to also run a Virus scan (I advise running Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, also from Download.com) on your external, because it sounds like a virus. Just FYI.

Xp not recognizing my 250gb WD passport

The Western Digital My Passport line, besides the Essential Series, is originally formated for a Mac (in the HFS+ format) and as such cannot be read by Windows PCs. You can either get a program to read the External such as Macdrive, or format it to NTFS or FAT32; formats that are readable by Windows. I would recommend formatting it to NTFS, because you can only transfer up to 4 Gigabyte files to FAT32, while NTFS is nearly limitless.

WD Elements 1tb External HDD media files skipping

Try running Scan Disk and defrag. Otherwise use a program like SpinRite to do a low level scan of the disk.

Good luck

New external harddisk cant be detected on my computer

Since you have not given any specifications about model of your HDD hence I'd consider your HDD connects through USB. Your USB driver is old you shall consider upgradation.

Free space on my external hdd

Check the file system on your My Book. FAT32 has a file size limit of 4GB. I ran into the same problem when I tried to copy over a 4.5GB file from my laptop with NTFS on it. The file would not copy.
