If your tractor has an anti back fire solenoid in the front of the carburetor then it should start if you remove it and cap it off with a pipe plug.It should run if the solenoid is the problem,if so you really should replace it but if it is'nt prone to backfiring with it remove you don't have to.You may also have a bad seat switch, confirm this by jumping the plug with a piece of wire to temporarily test it.

What causes starter housing to break near the fly wheel of John deere tractor 2950?

The starter armature may have been stuck while engaged with the flywheel or possibly just a casting that failed.

Have a 166 that just spins when starting...seems like it doesnt engage....starter or plugs?

Well seein how it turns over there could only be a lack of battery power on that note... spark plugs could be the problem but its most likely water in the bowl of the carb try to a very small drizzle in the carb and that will tell ya if its water insted of fuel in the carb... also depending on the age it could have point any more its electronic spark from the altinator under the fly wheel never suposed to fail.

How do I change a spark plug in a John Deere SX75 lawn mower? I can't figure out how to get to it.

I haven't been able to get mine out, but I can get to it. There is a shield held on by two fly nuts. It is right behind the seat and on the opposite side of the mower than the lever that engages the blade.

After the shield is removed, there is a black wire running to the top of the spark plug you should be able to pull it off.

Then you'll need a spark plug socket and an extension. I think it may be a 13/16 size socket that you will need. Turn gently back and forth till you get it out.

My john deere 425 wont start cranks motor spins will run a few sec with starting fluid then dies

Check your fuel filter and see if it's clogged. You might be able to blow it out with an air hose if it is.

John Deere 425 AWS no start, no nothing???

Sounds more like a bad starter than a bad coil.

A failing coil usually shows up during hot weather. The engine will start and run fine, then when it heats up, it just dies out. After a few minutes, it cranks again. Then the cycle repeats itself.

The ignition module and coil pack are the same part.

Are you sure full voltage is getting to the starter? There is likely a starter solenoid between the ignition key and the starter. These solenoids can be problematic and prevent the full 12 volts from getting to the battery.
