Any wireless router will work even though you do not have a CD rom drive.

If you connect the pc to the router with an ethernet cable you can manualy configure the router through internet explorer or firefox.

Your netbook probably has a wireless G adapter, so make sure your router supports the G wireless standard.

Technically you need no drive or software on you computer for this unless this is the computer you wish to manage the router with. you see you can still buy a new router and cable directly into it go to a web browser and type in 192.168.254.254 and this is generally the default html or web interface for the router. All changes you can make with software can be done from here as well. I would think you could buy any and just use the web interface instead of the software interface. That is what I do I toss all the software and use that interface when securing a client network or setting up a router for a client. Hope that helps you out.. Oh yes default username and password for most linksys routers will be admin / admin some are different but that info will be contained withing the literature that comes with it.

My acer aspire one netbook will not connect with my new linksys e2000 router.. It was fine with my former linksys router

If your former linksys router was NOT N but rather b/g, then the problem is likely that your new router is running N and must be reconfigured to run b/g instead of n on its wireless. The acer aspire one netbook's integrated WiFi is 802.11b/g and the only way to do 802.11n is by using a plug-in USB 802.11n wireless adapter. To manually configure the router's wireless for 802.11b/g or n...
1. Connect the netbook using an ethernet utp cat5 patch cable between one of the four RJ-45 LAN ports on the router to the 10/100 ethernet RJ-45 port on the netbook's left side.
2. Start a browser like Internet Explorer and enter IP address 192.168.1.1 (default for Linksys)
3. On the login window, enter admin for username and admin for default password, then click OK
(The password may be changed if the router's setup software on its CD has been run.)
4. On the Linksys Setup page, click the Wireless tab
5. On the Linksys Wireless page, for Network Mode, click v for drop menu and click BG-Mixed
The preceding is from Chapter 3: Advanced Configuration which starts at page 16 of the 59-page Linksys E2000 user guide/manual. If you are missing this manual, it can be obtained by clicking...

A final note: The easiest way to setup the router is to run its setup software on the CD that comes with it. If you want to do this with the netbook (which doesn't have an internal CD drive), an external CD drive would have to be plugged into one of its USB ports.

Rob, this change is router brand and model relevant. In essence you need to log into the router and change the wireless settings. Go to the website for the brand and download instructions relevant to yoru specific unit. You want to invoke WEP wireless security, and assign yoru own password, often yoru 10 digit home or cell phone number, change system ID to something that you recognize, change AND RECORD the changes that you make. Also, change the broadcast channel to 11 or so, and have less issues with land line wireless phones.

There is much higher security that you could invoke, but typically just passwording the wireless access does it.

Install software without a cd rom drive

Connect an Ethernet cable between the network-port on your computer and one of the LAN ports on the router.

Now, you have a "direct" connection to the web-server that is "inside" the router. Open your web-browser, and connect to the web-server, and then you can run the "Wireless Networking Setup Wizard" to create your wireless network, i.e., pick an SSID and a password, and enable "WPA" (Wireless Protected Access) security.

Now, you can disconnect the Ethernet cable, and you can "find" the SSID that you have chosen.

Bought a new computer and want to use usb 3g adapter on new computer. I think I need to install software, however there is no disk drive as it is a netbook

Dear johnls,
Try to copy the installation CD to a flashdisk the run the installation from flashdisk when you connect it via USB jack on your netbook.
Or try to connect the external Optic Drive (CD/DVD ROM), wait until the netbook complete the installation of your optic drive. Restart your netbook with external CD ROM connected via USB jack, then run the 3G installation from your External CD ROM.

GoodLuck!

Best regards,
