This does sound like the liquid crystal display is broken. So you are going to need a replacement. First thing I would check is to see if your laptop is still covered under your Acer warranty and if it is you might be able to get Acer to replace it.
If not they are easy to find in the Internet/eBay. All you need to do is have the exact model of notebook and do a search for parts. However alot of times the displays are not cheap so if your notebook is old and/or not in good condition it may be better to replace the whole system.
Also if you have not worked on a computer before you might want to go to your local computer store to have the work done.

Take the computer to a qualified technician, and ask about the costs (about $200 for the screen, $60 for labour) for replacing the screen.
