it wouldnt turn on and after pressing the button 3 times i went to the back and smelled smoke and then sure enough saw smoke so i unplugged it and took off the back and on (not sure the name ;some big horizontal circuit board) saw in spot w/8 there was a little something burnt to a crisp. i broke it off gently leaving the 2 leads incase i need to sloder something back. is this a common issue and does anyone no what part this is and do u think if i replace this part i will be able to use the tv again. tv hasnt powered up since a thunder storm months ago if that helps. thanks jim

- do you know what i can expect to pay for the board;and is this also called a mother board? and do you no the part number for the board too. sorry for all the extra questions but lastly after the swap of necessary parts will this thing be trustworthy to not be a fire hazard while im at work and my son and girlfriend are home. thanks a lot for your help, this model seems harder to find info on than others that have come up when searching for this one.

- ok thanks alot and once more i am sorry to ask you even more questions. i cant really get any info besides from you ive posted on a couple different sites too. ok so 1.even tho there is a burn on the circuit board where the resistor was located at v/8(not w like i thought it was actually to vs side by side). 2. r u saying i should at least replace thre resistor and see if that is all or do u think i sould replace both at the same time. and the chassis number is atc311 if that makes a difference i dont know. i will try to take a picture to show the board too but that my b awhile. thanks again. i just bought the soldering tools today from radio shack and tomorrow will look for the resistor. and finally just remembered 3. on another site i asked what it was thaT was burnt and someone said it was a capacitor but i think your a lot more credible. thanks jim

- here is my pic hopefully. and if i replace the resistor will my tv work for a short period or is it instantly going to over heat the resistor? thanks

- well replaced the splitter and blew again in 1 day. so this time i replaced the flyback and splitter and resistors 14718 14719 worked for a day then just stopped working again. it just happened i havent even bothered looking back there. any idea what could cause this to keep happening. i put hv putty over the slightly exposed trace where 14705 burned so i dont think arcing is a factor at least not there.

- what is rtv? is it like hv putty
and if so do i put it around the wires going in to the splitter or around the leads too. im looking for prices on rplacement boards now main deflector is the board i need i beleive.
-   I have the same problem for the 2nd time in 3 years. First time I had waranty and this time I do not have warranty. Would like to know how much it will cost to fix. Looking at my previous receipt, tech wrote replaced 1 Splitter and 1 CKT board. Please assist. Thank you.-   pmkumar1

-   I have pretty much the same problem with my HD52W140. When I try to turn mine on, it won't turn anything on including the light in front of the TV or any fans. I found a blown fuse in a vertical board on the back left side of the set with the back off. The prongs that hold the fuse in place are weak and don't hold the fuse well. I jumpered the fuse holder with an inline fuse, turned the set on and nothing. Turning it on numerous times does nothing as well as hitting lots of buttons on the remote. The fuse in it now stays OK. The resistor talked about in the post before me seems OK.
Where do I start, I have the back off No smoke, no noises when plugged in.
Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions. -   Guest
need to make sure you use hv rtv on the leads goin into the splitter or you will leak hv from the splitter. this will cause lots of proplems. also there are a few faulty new splitters.
Need to check to make sure you have the correct b+ goin to flyback if its too high then you will have to much hv. this may cause a shutdown.
r14705 and splitter usually fixes most, with rtv on the base of all wires.

- Ok, I didn't know I was goin to have to goto into detail. I"m a RCA tech, I've been repairing these boards. I will tell you that when replacing the R14705, you will need to in most cases repair the foil traces goin to this resister. Also there is sometimes another area to watch out for. Always check the H-output for shorts, if customer keeps pushing power button it will cause it to short along with the P/s. When this happens you will need to replace all parts in the main P/s on this board. The HV-splitter is the start of the problem. There also needs to be a good inspection of all resisters on this board. If you see something that is burnt or can't read colors, then you need to replace them before you turn it on.
From your description ..actually this is a common problem and no simpley replacing the resistor will not fix it. this chasis has a problem with what is called the high voltage splitter.. there was a number of these made with a defective splitter. RCA HAS ISSUED a service bulliteen for certain models and serial numbers. the board and the splitter is generally replaced. (I just worked on one of these 2 days ago and got and order in for the parts) ......just reread the tech bulliteen.. the spitter which develops a crack is rca part number 258512 the resistor or the part that burnt is resistor a common 27k 1/2 watt 10% carbon resistor

- Ok .What i got to say not going to be nice... i just checked the price on that board. 275. and 80 for the splitter. Now i would recomend just replacing resistor ..at most you would pay is a buck for it. 27k 1/2 watt 10% carbon resistor... you still need the spitter. 258512 the worst that would probally happens is that is burns up again... if theres mor problems than we see now. you probally get that resistor at radio shack.. Replacing the splitter is probaly going to be the hardest thing.. it is a thing that is kinda like the distribitor in a car it distribites high voltage to each of the tubes.. looks kinda like one too.. got 4 wires comeing out off it...it is located in front of tv under the tubes.

- It is the faulty high voltage splitter that causes the burnt resistor. You will need to replace both at same time. In the past i have replaced this reistor and it has had other problems but it is where us tech start. LIke i said rca tech bulliteen tv-03005 is what im basis my diagnoses on. picture would be nice. how bad is the board damaged? how much carbon is on the board. before repair i would use denaturted alchol or acetone with a tooth brush to clean as best you can. o buy the way you can reach me at the shop at Willie@fordtv.com

- WOW it torched it didnt it! like i sid clean it up good then make sure the traces wasnt damaged. this is why we ussally replace the board in these cases

- that big of a blown up part. i suspect that spltter is going to be bad.
