How to access a Quantum LM20A011 from A: Startup disk

Hi all,

I am trying to rescue an old Dell Dimension XPS 650r from what looks to be a virus. I was able to boot the machine with a startup disk but I am currently in the command line a:\. The drive C is not recognized and I wonder how can I configure some parameters at the autoexec.bat or config.sys to be able to access drive c:\ once the machine boots through drive a:

Help is appreciated. Tks!

How to read old quantum 100MB HDD

Does you motherboard have the old PATA connectors (white 4 pin molex power and 40/80 pin flat & wide data cables?
Being that old you may have to get the little jumper pins at the back to be set in the correct layout (probably slave).
You can also get external PATA cases or docking stations and set it up that way.

WHAT CAN USE TO REPLACE A MAXTOR 7Y250MO HARD DRIVE? IT IS IN A 6 1/2 YEAR OLD DELL DEMENSION XPS GEN 2 TOWER RUNNING WIN XP. THE OS CAN NO LONGER FIND THE DRIVE AND WILL NOT BOOT UP. I WOULD LIKE TO...

Hi,
The Dell Dimension XPS GEN2 has support for both, IDE and SATA standards. Your Maxtor is SATA drive, you can use any SATA drive as replacement. You mentioned that the OS no longer find the drive, make sure that you load SATA drivers at your Windows XP reinstallation, maybe your old drive is not defective only not recognized in the installation process. You can download the floppy image with required drivers here, see SATA drivers section. When you start Windows installation, at the Windows Setup Screen you should see, at the bottom of the screen, a message saying "Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver." At that point press the F6 button and when the next screen appears press S key to specify an additional device. Select the drivers from the provided list(to load all drivers from the disk, beacuse I don't know which is yours as I don't know the content of the disk, repeat steps to specify additional device), after drivers load your hard drive should be recognized and you can continue installing the Windows XP operating system. Ignore these steps if your hard was already tested and confirmed that is defective. Good luck!
If this is the solution for your problem, please rate my post, otherwise give us more details.

Regards,
Andras

My hard drive crashed and my laptop is only a year old and just went out of warranty what can I do? I have a xps studio 16

Hi,

Your question is fairly open ended so I will answer in general. Feel free to follow up with me by responding to this answer if you need further advice.

If you have your personal data backed up you can simply take the laptop to a local PC shop and ask them to put a new hard drive in it. Laptop harddrives average about $100, then either pay them to re-install using your dell recovery disks or you can re-install the laptop yourself using the recovery disks dell provided.

If you need data off the old hard drive, ask the techs there to check the drive to see if it's working, if it is and only windows has crashed you can have them put the drive in an enclosure, making it an external drive and you will be able to sift through it and find your files once you XPS is running. If the drive is not accessible ask them for any information they can provide regarding the failure and reply back. I am a data recovery expert and can advise you on your options if this is necessary

Chris.

once you have installed them physically into your comptuer like that, start it up.

Now you still have windows xp, and you have a clean 2nd hard drive.

You do not need to install windows xp on the 2nd drive

Quantum Fireball lct 30gig not recognized in Dell Dimension 3000

Turns out this particular drive needs TWO jumpers on it, to set it to CS. I received it used with a single jumper in the Master position, but after checking the Maxtor/Quantum website, it listed the jumper positions and showed the second jumper. As soon as I installed the TWO jumpers in the correct position, the Dimension 3000 booted right up and let me reinstall Windows. I had scoured the internet for many hours looking for a solution, none solved it until I decided to check the manufacturers website. Always start there!- Solved!
