Question about Jenn-Air JJW9527C Expressions Collection Electric Single Oven
The green digital display that reads the time, temp and timer modes has gone dim. can I fix this myself? or do I need a repairman? The front buttons are all built into the oven and flat. if I cant read the display is difficult to gage time & temp. Thanks
The digital display on my jenn-air oven, model jjw9527c...has gone completely out. i am very efficient in wiring and electronics and would have no problem fixing it myself, just not sure which parts i need to order. Please return this with a solution, holiday season is very close.....thank u

On the jenn-air w27400w display that is dim or non-existent. Replaced three of the electrolytic caps on the display board. I used two 470uF @35vdc and one 100uF @50vdc purchased from Radio Shack for $4.42. the display came alive with it's original brightness. Any electronic tech or handy Ham Radio Operator should be able to replace the caps easily.

Approx 5 year old Jenn Air Oven display gradually dimmed over time and eventually became unreadable.
The problem, in my case, was the VFD (Vacuum Fluorescent Display) itself which cannot be separately removed from the printed circuit board (pcb). I verified this was not a power issue by checking that 5V was present on pin 21 of the HD40318S 4 bit microcomputer. I got the data sheet for the controller on line. On checking further on VFD reliability on the internet, wikipedia explained the physics of the VFD construction and how this technology is subject to "fading" over time.
I found a replacement assembly at RepairClinic.com. Assembly part# 695197, "Electronic Clock Control" cost $180.70+shipping. It worked. However, there is a caution here. The replacement assembly had 2 subtle differences. The pcb replacement was made using SMT (Surface Mout Technology), whereas the original was made using the older PTH (Plated Through Hole technology). This wasn't an issue because schematically both assemblies were the same BUT one of the three connectors was different. I had to improvise here and make a pass through using IC pins from an IC wire wrap assembly I had and did this without compromising warranty.

Temporary solution, rapping on the display brings it back to normal for about a day. Certainly not a permanent fix, though.
