Ok.. The dvd-r laser might have died, but a seperate laser handles the CDrs.. Can it still READ DVD's if it can, you might be ok still.. Grab a simple free dvd burner program like AVS or HTfireman and try with them.. Also.. different blanks. I doubt its a driver problem...

Not possible at all. To install XP or Vista again, you need a CD/DVD drive working.
(or)
Contact Aspire(or local technician) if they can ship a XP/Vista pre-installed Hard-disk.
What is it doing. Are you trying to burn a dvd movie, what software are you using to try and burn it. If you are trying to burn a movie, you wont be able to unless you have the special programs to remove the copyrights and possible compress the video files to fit on the blank dvd. Most burning software wont allow buring of movies due to copyright reasons unless you do what i stated above.
You need to read on the drive and see exactly what type of drive it is. A DVD-ROM drive is read only and will NOT burn DVD's. The drive needs to read DVD-RW, in order to burn DVD's.
i assume your dvd is working ok.
to burn, acer give you application (NTI cd-dvd) to burn cd/dvd, i amnot sure the complete name, but for sure is NTI...
You should have this software when you reload/cpr the operating system.
