When one light from the four lights ring itself changes from green to red, it means that a general hardware failure has occurred or is imminent. Blinking of one red light with an error message like E66, E67, E68, E71, E74 or E77 means a repairable problem while the one red light blinking without error message means some critical or irrepairable problem. The problem can be avoided by restarting the Xbox 360 console but if you have not received any error message with one blinking red light then the problem is irrepairable. The console will behave the same way and you should understand that one or more of the hardware components in your console have stopped functioning due to hardware failure. If you receive an error message with one red light blinking then the problem is reparable and the system will definitely start working. It means that there is some hardware problem with the Xbox 360 console connection occurring due to the misplacing of cables in the ports. 1 red light indicates that there is general hardware related problem with the console, 2 red lights indicate the overheating of the console, 3 red lights indicate the red ring of death and 4 red lights indicate that you need to tighten your AV console wire. If you get any of the problems and your system is under warranty, you can ship your console directly to Microsoft and you will get back your Xbox 360 red ring fixed by the manufacturer, however it might take more than a month and you will also have to bear the additional shipping charges. If your warranty period is over, you will have to pay additional amount of $140, if you choose to send the Xbox 360 to Microsoft for red ring fix. This means your 360 has had a hardware failure. If you have purchased your XBOX 360 within the last 3 years you will still have free warranty on it. Call XBOX customer support and they will help you with replacing/repairing your Xbox 360. 1-800-4MY-XBOX. (1-800-469-9269)

If you have this problem try to fix it yourself before sending the unit in.
1) Remove your hard drive and/or memory units.
2) Run “Initial Setup” under the system blade.
3) Decline inserting HDD or memory unit when prompted.
4) Sync your controller and pop in a game.
