RCA DRD480RE Receiver

RCA receiver problem?

By M0nica L - usenet poster

I have a new RCA DRD480RE receiver and have noticed a problem with the video
output.  Occasionally the color drops out, or changes for a second or two,
then it's back to normal.  I've noticed this on the S-Video output, but
haven't seen it yet on the composite or RF out.

Has anyone else noticed this problem or is it just my specific receiver?

Thanks,
Marc

You said it happens with all RCA receivers "especially" with Sony TVs.
To me that implies that you are saying it happens will all other TVs
too. I'm not even sure it happens with ALL Sonys. Where did you get that info?

I have read some of these posts for the last while and just wanted to
comment that I have the RCA RD221 and a Sony 27 inch TV and I have no
problem.

He's either brand new on the job, or blowing smoke up your ass.  The problem
is well-known by RCA...

Yes it is ALL RCA receivers with Sony TV's.  Nothing was said about JVC.

I have a 1 year old JVC w/36" picture tube and my RCA DRD480RE works
perfect with it on the S-Video output and the standard video coax output
as well. So it doesn't affect "all" RCA receivers. I would describe the
480's picture quality and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound quality on DirecTV's
pay per view channels to be as flawless as I have ever seen on non-HD television.

It isn't on ALL RCA boxes, just most of them.  I have three RCA 222s and it
happens on 2 of them.  The third, running through a TiVo, doesn't have the
problem.  On the other hand, I also have a Hughes Platinum DD type receiver
connected through another TiVo to my Sony Wega XBR 36" flatscreen, and that
one is perfect in all ways.

Overall recommendation?  Buy Hughes, you can't go wrong.

does hughes have any systems that are dolby digital and offer Wink
television service? That's the reason why I bought the 480 re in the first
plave. I then decided I had better return it and get and stereo system
first(which is what i did). I want to know what to buy later this summer. I
have an Dolby Digital Home Theater System and want to know if my
current(non-dolby) systems will work on it or will i need an dolby digital
system to get the theater quality sound out of my stereo system? Now I don't
have any Sony Televisions in my house and I seem to like the fact that the
Rca's that i have show an channel while going through the guide. The thing I
really care about is the ability for other systems to be wink compatible via
an receiver upgrade. Are there any other systems besides the 480re that will
do this?
thanks

Yep.  My recommendation is the Hughes, but you could go with the Sony if you
don't mind their "shimmering reds and oranges" problem.  Your choice :-)

I went from a 515 to the 480 because my 515 got trashed by an electrical
storm.  I never had any problems with the 515.

I also talked to a guy at RCA tech support today and he said that he has not
heard of this problem.  Does anyone have the name/phone of someone there who
knows about this??

Interesting but disturbing. I have a first gen RCA DRD 102RW and 203RW
and they both exhibited the color drop out, one on a Sony and one on a
Toshiba. I also have an RCA DS515MLB (32 bit, dolby) and have not
noticed the problem on that receiver.
I'm looking at the 480RE. I just got a Sony SAS A55 which has all the
above features but I will probably return it because...
-it seems slower than the DS515MLB
-I don't like the guide as much as the DS515MLB (clock is in different
places depending on guide, have to press "display" to get channel title
and program description, on the RCA you press select once for the title
then again for the description)
-the remote can operate RF or IR but not both! So if you set it to RF to
operate from another room, you can't use a universal IR remote on it.

It affects all late-model RCA receivers, especially if you have a Sony TV.
Won't matter which output you use, it happens on all of them...
